The Senate is going to push through a partisan bill to send another nearly $70 billion to these mass deportation campaigns. $70,000,000,000 is a huge amount of our budget that could be well spent, but instead of using it to help regular people who can’t afford anything right now, we’re shoveling it into the coffers of an agency that killed two Minnesotans, sent hundreds to detention centers with horrifying conditions, and routinely denies legal immigrants the medical care they need while keeping them unjustly held against their will.
We should be clear that this administration is still doing what they did in Minneapolis at the height of Operation Metro Surge, they’re just doing a better job of keeping it out of the news. Look at Camp East Montana. Look at Delaney Hall. Things aren’t different, and shoveling more money into ICE’s coffers will only make a bad problem worse.
They’ve already separated 100,000 children from their families, 75% of them being U.S. Citizens who have every right to be here.
I'm not above admitting that I was hopeful because in the days and weeks that Operation Metro Surge was unfolding, so many Republicans offered their condolences, even their support. Many of them are on the record saying they wanted a joint investigation. So I filed an amendment to require just that. The amendment would stipulate that the federal government must investigate the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in coordination with Minnesota state law enforcement, to ensure there is no cover up. I look forward to seeing which of my colleagues will use their power to support Minnesota, rather than just share niceties.
History will remember that Minnesota won the battle of Operation Metro Surge, and we will keep fighting the Minnesota way. We will double down on our love for our neighbors and unity in the face of injustice. We won’t forget out neighbors Alex and Renee and Liam and all the others who have been hurt. We will keep fighting for our country.
