Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army (Energy and Sustainability) Mr. J.E. “Jack” Surash kicked off the U.S. Army’s Energy Manager Training Workshop this morning.

The event brings together more than 250 representatives from U.S. Army Logistics, HQDA G-4, Installation Management Command (IMCOM), U.S. Army Materiel Command, U.S. Army Reserve, the National Guard, and Army installations to discuss energy security and resilience.

In Mr. Surash’s opening remarks he emphasized that these sessions are critical to professional development as they discuss lessons learned, new legislation, and program initiatives.

The training workshop is also held in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program’s annual Energy Exchange and serves as the Army’s kickoff to the event.

Mr. Jordan Gillis, acting assistant secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment gave the keynote address for the AUSA Hot Topic event, attended by approximately 120 DoD, industry and academic participants, and over 300 on-line viewers. Panels addressing Joint Service Installation Management chaired by Lt. Gen. Gwen Bingham; Total Army Installation Management, featuring Land-holding commanders, deputies or representatives; Installations of the Future, chaired by Mr. Richard Kidd, deputy assistant secretary of the Army for Strategic Integration; and Energy Security and Resilience, chaired by Mr. Jack Surash, assistant secretary of the Army for Energy and Sustainability, were well attended. We thank AUSA for this exceptional opportunity.

Mr. Jordan Gillis, acting assistant secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy, and Environment attended and spoke during the Redstone Arsenal ribbon cutting in Alabama today. Redstone Arsenal, in collaboration with SunPower Corporation, developed a 10-megawatt (MW), alternating current (AC), solar project with 1 MW/2 MWh battery storage.

Assistant Secretary of the United States Army - IE&E

On 2 November 2017, Department of Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) held its 2016 Energy & Water Management Awards ceremony at the National Archives in Washington, DC.

FEMP presented 27 awards for outstanding achievements in energy and water efficiency, renewable energy, and fleet management from across all Federal Agencies with Army receiving eight awards, the most within any agency.

Award recipients, recognized with an engraved plaque, included Mr. Paul Wirt (Reserves) receiving the Career Exceptional Service Award; Fort Knox the Laboratory/Data Center Award; HQ IMCOM, Fort Irwin, Fort A.P. Hill, and the 9th Mission Support Command U.S. Army Reserves receiving Program Awards; and the Presidio of Monterey and Army Central Command receiving Project Awards.

Welcome to ASA (IE&E)

On October 16, 2017, Mr. Jordan Gillis was appointed as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army (Installations, Energy and Environment), and is serving as the Acting Assistant Secretary (IE&E).

Mr. Gillis spent several years in the Army living and working at installations such as Fort Sill and Fort Stewart. More recently, he has served as an advisor in the energy industry working primarily with electric utilities across the country.
