Walter Pierce Park Dog Park

Walter Pierce Park Dog Park The Walter Pierce Park Dog Park (Adams Morgan Dog Park) was created in 2004 and was D.C.'s first official dog park. The Walter Pierce Dog Park (Adams Morgan Dog Park) was created in late 2004 as the city's first official/unofficial dog park.
(1)

A group of neighborhood dog owners and interested citizens worked with the Department of Parks and Rec., the Executive Office of the Mayor and the Council of the District of Columbia to establish the dog park on the western edge of Walter Pierce Park, an area of the park that had previously been underused or often used for illegal activity. Part of the work including helping draft and lobby on behalf of the necessary legislation to allow for off-leash dog parks in the city.

In interest of the weather forecast, the tree removal work will have to be postponed until Tuesday, Sept 15 2020. Sorry to have to reschedule, but we want to have a safe and efficient work space.

We have been notified by the District’s Arborists as well as the National Park Arborists that they will need to close the dog park on Friday, the 11th to remove some trees that are leaning over the dogpark precariously. These trees are not in the dogpark, but on NPS land behind the fence and urgently need to be removed as they are a hazard for the safety of all two-legged and four-legged visitors.

Hey all, the fencing is now up for the water project. The park will be without water for "several weeks" as the project is completed. While not ideal, we went 13.5 years without water in the dog park, we can all suffer through "several weeks" to get a fancy, permanent water source! Thanks!

Woooo! 200 used tennis balls for the dog park! Don’t worry, we won’t put all 200 in at once, but man that would be fun!

An update on the water at the dog park:
Dear Walter Pierce Park Community,

I wanted to reach out and let you know that we will now be installing the new permanent water line to the dog park spigot and we will be installing a new human drinking fountain with a bottle filter sooner than later. The main reason for this expedited work is that there is a leak in the existing temporary water line in the dog park. We are working closely with DCRA for this work and collaborating with the City Archaeologist to ensure all appropriate measures are taken as we will need to trench the line behind the existing retaining wall. Although we do not expect to uncover any archaeological findings or remains, as this is all fill material behind the retaining wall, we will be working with the utmost care together with an archaeologist.
This being said, due to the urgent need to replace the water line, we do plan to install a temporary chain link fence later this week, which will be set on concrete blocks to protect the work area adjacent to the wall. At the same time we will try to ensure there is safe passage for pedestrians to circulate though the park. However, there may be a week that we need to close the trail through the park near the corner on the trail above the high retaining wall. During that time we will post clear signage that the path will not connect through the park. The dog park, playground, field and other amenities will remain largely open during the construction.
Please see the attached work fence layout plan and let me know if you have any specific concerns.
Sincerely,
- Peter

Hi! This is a bit of an interesting post but bear with me! Yesterday (Tuesday evening) a little before 6 PM I was bitten by a small black dog that was tied up outside the CVS/Wingo’s/Chipotle area of Wisconsin Ave in Glover Park. I am currently trying to find that dog's owner to make sure they are up to date on their vaccines. I am not at ALL interested in pressing charges or anything like that, I just want to avoid getting treatment for rabies if it isn’t necessary. Description of the dog: Small (10-15lbs), black, some small white spots, curly fur I have contacted animal control and they are also looking for the dog/owner, but I figured I would try to use the magic of Facebook groups as well. Please let me know if you have any info! Thanks!!!!

Our schedule is shifting and will need to find someone to help out with Moka's afternoon walk on Mondays Tuesdays and Thursdays Who do other folks in the area use? We've used rover and wag as needed but are hoping for someone more regular. I have Will's number and I know a ton of folks work with him, but seeing how busy he always is, I wanted to see what else is available. Thanks. Danny and Anna
Tomorrowl the Adams Morgan ANC will discuss and vote (?) on this resolution to STOP the water project currently underway, bringing water to the dogpark. Perhaps you believe the current project should continue... If so, consider attending this meeting. Wed May 01 @ 7:00PM - ANC1C Mary's Center 2355 Ontario Road NW Washington, DC *** DRAFT RESOLUTION URGING DPR/DGS TO WORK WITH WMATA TO PROVIDE WATER TO THE WALTERPIERCE PARK DOG PARK, 4/24/2019 Whereas, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation and the Department of General Services(DPR/DGS) have announced plans to make improvements to Walter Pierce Park late in 2019, including replacing playground equipment, providing a permanent water line to the dog park, and in some way memorializing the historic Quaker and African American cemeteries that occupied the site until 1890;and Whereas, there is extensive scientific documentation of graves and grave-related materials still present in Walter Pierce Park, where at least 8,428 burials occurred, and any digging in the park should be avoided when possible, mitigated when necessary, and conducted only when an archaeologist is present to monitor the work; Whereas, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) on April 17, 2019, informedANC-1-c of its plans to upgrade its Toddle House bus turnaround bordering the southwestern edge of Walter Pierce Park, including working on its water pipes at the site, and, at the same time, WMATA officials announced a willingness to discuss with city officials a plan to provide a water source for the park, including the dog park which is less than 50 feet from the bus turnaround; Whereas, DPR/DGS officials were informed on April 18, 2019, by community members of WMATA's offer to work with the Walter Pierce Park improvements team; Whereas, DPR/DGS announced on April 23, 2019, that it would immediately undertake "emergency" repairs to replace a leaking temporary water line to the Walter Pierce dog park with a permanent one, necessitating the digging of a several-foot-deep trench along a few hundred feet of the park to reach the dog park, although no leaks along the existing temporary line are visible and the dog-park spigot is working; Therefore, ANC 1C recommends that DPR/DGS avoid unnecessary digging in Walter Pierce Park due to the park's archaeological resources and urges DPR/DGS to explore ways to work with WMATA to provide water sources to the southwestern end of the park where the dog park and WMATA bus turnaround are located
