Today, the LGBT CSA solemnly commemorates all of our transgender family whose lives were lost this past year due to anti-trans hate and violence. We remember their names, and we commit to ending these injustices wherever they may be.

Our fight continues for the rights of q***r, trans, and gender non-conforming people to be who they are and express their authentic selves without fear of violence.

Rest in Power.

Hill associations push for more diversity in lawmakers' staffs

Congressional staff should reflect the diverse American people we serve in Congress every day. Yet only 30.5 percent of the Congressional workforce is nonwhite. We joined over a dozen congressional staff associations in calling on House and Senate leadership to make diversity and inclusion in staffing a priority in the 117th Congress.

As we face new challenges both in the House of Representatives, and in our daily lives, it has never been more important to be our authentic selves. Every day that our LGBTQ+ members show up (even virtually!), they make the Hill a better, more brilliant, and even more amazing place.

While we couldn’t get together for a picture this year, we are so proud of our LGBTQ+ Hill family—wherever you are on your journey, we see you, and we stand with you.

Happy #NationalComingOutDay from the LGBT CSA! 🏳️‍🌈

Wishing all our LGBTQ family in Congress and across the nation a very happy #PrideMonth! As we kick off this Pride Month, we stand in solidarity with the Black community against racism & disproportionate violence against communities of color.

06/01/2020

Today, the LGBT Congressional Staff Association Board of Directors released the following statement:

"As we enter Pride Month, we reflect on the discrimination and brutality that sparked the Stonewall Uprising and gave life to the modern LGBTQ liberation movement. Our community has made progress in our pursuit of true equality for the LGBTQ community, but our work is nowhere near complete. And we recognize that much of the progress we have made is thanks to the relentless work and activism of q***r people of color.

"Today, our nation is outraged and saddened by the systemic racism plaguing our communities and the disproportionate violence occurring against communities of color. We stand in solidarity with the Black community after the deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd, and share in the grief our members are feeling over these tragedies.

"We further recognize and condemn the disproportionate discrimination and violence against our Black q***r family—including the discrimination faced by Christian Cooper, and the tragic death of Tony McDade and many other Black transgender people.

"As the fight for equality for the LGBTQ community continues, it is our responsibility to confront racism and discrimination against communities of color, in all their forms.

"This Pride Month, we reaffirm the LGBT Congressional Staff Association's commitment to advance and promote the safety, inclusion, and well-being of all our members, and of all staff in the House of Representatives. The fight for LGBTQ equality in the workplace is intersectional, and our organization stands with the Congressional Black Associates and the Senate Black Legislative Staff Caucus in affirming that truth."

2020 CSA BOARD ELECTIONS ANNOUNCEMENT:
The LGBT CSA is excited to announce a General Membership Meeting to elect the 2020 Board of Directors on Monday, February 24th at 3:45pm in Longworth B-208.

It is also time for CSA Members to renew their membership by paying annual dues here: https://www.lgbtcsa.org/membership. First-time junior staffers, interns, and anyone else needing financial assistance have their dues paid by the Pay-It-Forward fund, thanks to contributions from other members. Please direct any membership-related questions to [email protected].

All eight positions on the Board are up for election each year. As the outgoing President not seeking reelection, with the consent of the Board, I will serve as election officer, per the CSA's bylaws. Members interested in running for the board can review Board positions, responsibilities, and eligibility requirements in the bylaws here: https://www.lgbtcsa.org/bylaws.

Flagging in advance one possible change to the bylaws affecting this year's election: A CSA Member is proposing an amendment to our bylaws to be considered at the General Membership Meeting. The amendment would redesignate one of the At-Large Director positions as the Service and Community Engagement Director. This position would focus on expanding regular CSA events beyond happy hours, in addition to planning and executing service projects. If adopted, there would still be eight director positions as follows: President, Vice President, Communications Director, Professional Development Director, Social Events Director, Membership Director, Service and Community Engagement Director, and At-Large Director. Therefore, candidates can preliminarily declare for the Service and Community Engagement Director if interested. If the amendment is not adopted, candidates who submitted their candidacy for Service and Community Engagement Director will be considered candidates for the At-Large Director positions.

Candidates must submit their candidacy to [email protected] 5 pm EST on Tuesday, February 18th. Candidates must submit their name, current position, employing office, and a brief candidate statement (less than 250 words). Candidates must also pay their dues by the deadline to be eligible to run. Candidate statements will be emailed to the membership on Wednesday, February 19th.

Members must be up to date with their 2020 Membership (by paying dues or electing to use the Pay-It-Forward fund) to vote in the election on the 24th. An electronic voting option will be provided for members unable to attend the meeting.

Attention DC area people! I am co-hosting a fat-affirming radically inclusive clothing swap for larger bodies of all genders. Size 16 (women’s), size L (men’s), size 38 waist, and above only please. We are especially interested in recruiting people sizes 4X-6X and beyond, who sometimes feel left out of clothing swaps because of under-representation and fewer clothing options. If you are within those sizes, we’d love to see you there! If you know someone who fits that description, please help spread the word! Check out the event page for The Big Swap for details. Hope you can make it! Event link in comments
