The Joint Staff

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley:

“America is capable and ready to defend the homeland and support our allies and partners. The Joint Chiefs and I remain in constant communication while in quarantine and the chain of command remains the same. There has been no impact on our ability to effectively plan, coordinate and synchronize efforts to defend our nation.”

Meet Dr. Mary Edwards Walker. Dr. Walker became the first female U.S. Army field surgeon and the only woman to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. As a doctor, she was able to go behind enemy lines to treat the wounded, giving her excellent placement and access to information.

During the Civil War she was captured by the Confederates as a spy. Upon her release from prison she continued to serve. We acknowledge Dr. Walker’s great contributions in the DIA Museum.
