As an Army cavalry scout serving in Korea, Bernard Forrest surveilled terrain and assessed key intelligence as part of a team of experts. The role required persistence and focus, qualities he tapped into as a veteran navigating brain surgery to manage seizures, homelessness and mental health diagnoses of PTSD and anxiety.

He spent much of the last year finding his way back to wellness, and in early 2026, Forrest began working with a case manager from U.S.VETS’ Staff Sgt. Fox Su***de Prevention Grant Program in Washington, D.C., and a support network including Disabled American Veterans, Veterans On the Rise and Friendship Place.

Working with advocates and using his own determination, Forrest filed a successful appeal to claim his disability status, found suitable employment, reunited with his family and his dog, and moved into a stable apartment in the city.

“My U.S.VETS case manager helped me with extra support about my housing, about my job, my disability status, and he was someone to talk to and be there for me every step of the way,” Forrest says. “I still check in with him, just to let him know I’m OK.

Now, as his 12-year-old daughter heads into a new school year, Forrest looks forward to starting a new job through the VA's compensated work therapy program in an office setting without physical demands. Forrest says his U.S.VETS case manager even shared tips with his wife, a youth counselor, on enrolling in classes this fall toward a social work degree at the University of the District of Columbia.

“It was a long journey to have my place and have my benefits and be back with my family,” Forrest adds. “For people that are going through something and need to hear another veteran, I’ve bounced back from my struggles. It wasn’t easy, but I’m doing better.”

Did you know? Hope is alive and well in this city. Organizations like Access Housing Inc. DC are on the front lines every day, sheltering and serving the servicemembers who once served us. This week, U.S. VETS' Emma Shaw and Christopher Gaffney had the privilege of joining Access Housing to connect with their incredible veterans by sharing resources, answering questions, and building relationships that matter.

Every conversation, every connection, and every resource shared is a step toward a District where no veteran is left without a place to call home. We're grateful for partners like Access Housing who help bring us closer to that future, one day at a time.

Big news! Our Executive Director, Quandrea Patterson, joined Fox News this Fourth of July to share the incredible work U.S. VETS is doing to support our nation's veterans, from housing and employment services to mental health resources and community reintegration programs.

It was an honor to spotlight our mission on such a meaningful day, reminding everyone that celebrating freedom means standing behind the men and women who have defended it for us.

Thank you to Fox News for the platform, and thank you to our incredible staff and supporters who make this work possible.

Quandrea Patterson, executive director of U.S.VETS Washington, D.C., joined Fox 5 DC.

Yesterday, members of the U.S.VETS Richmond team Jocelyn, Dawn, and Keshia had the honor of volunteering at the Virginia War Memorial's annual Hills of Heroes event.

Together with other volunteers, they helped place thousands of American flags across Memorial Hill in tribute to the brave American service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. It was a meaningful and impactful morning spent honoring the courage, sacrifice, and legacy of our nation's heroes.

As an added highlight, the team had the opportunity to meet and take a photo with Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger!

We are grateful to the Virginia War Memorial for allowing us to be part of such a special tradition and to help honor those who gave everything in service to our nation. We are proud to stand alongside our community in remembering the heroes whose sacrifices will never be forgotten.

We had a phenomenal time yesterday hosting another Veterans Forge AI Workshop! Our veterans learned how to use AI to strengthen their resumes, prepare for interviews, boost productivity, and explore new career and business opportunities.

A huge thank you to MISSION BBQ, The Executive Office of the Mayor, ChatGPT, and The American Legion for helping make this event possible. Together, we're ensuring our veterans have the tools and skills to succeed in the age of AI.
