In Washington, DC we're mostly built out. 74% of all greenhouse gases attributable to the District of Columbia are to our buildings. In the District we're a dense, urban environment, so that challenges us to come up with a lot of different strategies to allow for clean energy to be utilized in multi-family or different building types. @MayorBowser's #SolarForAll initiative allows us to do that better, because the funding encourages District Government to see who can innovate the best. In episode 7, we explore how innovation and collaboration between Solar for All and DC Housing Authority maximizes impact for residents.
Some 65 high school students took their first steps at becoming engineers, pilots, astronauts, and more today as they built solid-fuel rockets and launched them.
The young people are all participating in the District of Columbia Housing Authority’s Do Your Best summer employment program for DCHA customers. They were working with STEM Growth, a partnership made possible through U.S. Housing and Urban Development’s EnVision Center program.
They also worked together to build several solid-fuel rockets under the guidance of Robinson and his team of youth from Spotsylvania County, Pennsylvania’s Courtland High School. Once several rockets had been completed, the group went to an open field behind the Southwest Family Enhancement and Career Center to launch them.
Many launches were successful, but not all!

DCHA’s new trikes are cost effective and nimble tools that our officers can use to increase their interactions with the communities they serve and protect. #WeareDCHA #SummerofSafety DCHABuilds #CommunityPolicing
“Our communities have seen great success in the past year with our community policing strategies and targeted patrols,” DCHA Police Chief Joel Maupin said. “With these new trikes, our officers will be very visible, but also be able to traverse more ground quickly. Combining our efforts with MPD’s Summer Crime Initiative will help reduce violent crimes across the city.”

DCHA's Office of Property Management and Operations (PMO) is spearheading the agency's efforts to add more trees to our properties in cooperation with the Mayor's Tree Canopy Plan. The goal is to cover 40% of the District with healthy tree canopy by 2032.
DCHA PMO staff and apprentices, along with partners Americorps and C&D Trees, got off to a great start planting more than 40 trees at Stoddert Terrace! Stay tuned for more as we #GreenDC.
