The Capitol City Pharmacy Medical Reserve Corps (CCPMRC) is a group of local pharmacy volunteers in Washington, DC, focused on improving the health and safety of their community. We are the first nationally-recognized pharmacy-specialized MRC. CCPMRC is a collaboration between the Howard University College of Pharmacy and the DC Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Administration. This MRC has been uniquely established in October 2013 to recruit and train volunteers to provide pharmacy-related functions during an emergency situation, and has been established as the first nationally-recognized pharmacy-specialized since 2015. Pharmacy related functions include but are not limited to mass vaccinations, staffing medical point-of-dispensing stations and provision of emergency supply of chronic medications.

A message from the Student Director:

Goodevening,

As Student Executive Director of the CCPMRC, I want to send our sincerest gratitude and excitement for being the recipients of the Champion Award. We are very proud of our amazing volunteers as well as the advisory board members who all work effortlessly in the city Washington D.C. I have attached a photo from our Training Symposium which includes approximately 55 new trainees who are joining our unit and our current advisory board. Please also find the blurb about some our work below:

This has been an exciting year for the Capitol City Medical Reserve Corps., we are in full swing with our new MediServe initiative in which we teach the community about appropriate pain management and educate them about proper use of opioids and other analgesic medications. Through this program, we are also educating them on how to use Naloxone and the processes to obtain their own supply within the district. Additionally, as a pharmacy specific MRC we pride ourselves on being "experts" in points of dispensing (PODs) we were very fortunate through partnerships with a number of our community partners to lead and coordinate Washington D.C.'s first ever homeless vaccination POD which served as a full-scale exercise to train our volunteers on the proper way to run a POD and also helped Washington D.C. combat the flu epidemic within the homeless population. In addition, we have supported the district in several other capacities throughout the year such as providing volunteers during mass-gatherings to help provide patient triage and patient tracking services.

I hope that this is enough information if you have additional questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
--
Detron M. Brown, MPH

Reseau Docteur, Inc.

The first nationally recognized pharmacy-based Medical Reserve Corps (MRC), The Capitol City Pharmacy Medical Reserve Corps (CCPMRC) is a group of local volunteers in Washington, D.C. focused on improving the health and safety of their community, and responding in emergency events under the coordinated efforts of local, state, and federal health officials. The poster presented at the 2018 APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition was on the Effectiveness of a University-Based Pharmacy Specific Medical Reserve Corps in Increasing the Pharmacy Personnel’s Knowledge and Willingness to Respond to Public Health Emergencies. Recent natural events have highlighted the increased need for more healthcare professionals to respond to emergencies and pharmacy personnel are often hesitant to get involved in relief efforts, as they oftentimes are unaware of the role they can play. In managing point of dispensing stations for imperative chronic medications, pharmacy personnel can positively impact relief efforts and the work of CCPMRC helps to bring that to the forefront.

Volunteer Opportunity ----> The “March For Our Lives” rally, a demonstration led by students to raise awareness against gun violence and encourage legislators to enforce laws to help eradicate the growing issue, will take place here in Washington D.C. on Saturday, March 24, 2018. The Department of Health (DOH)/Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Administration (HEPRA) will need volunteers in the event we are asked to staff medical aid stations and/or provide patient tracking teams. If the need arises, we want to ensure that we are able to provide adequate coverage for these two areas.
