Our summer interns showed off dramatic acoustics with this balloon pop inside a massive cooling tower at the Bellefonte nuclear plant. The tower’s huge open space and hyperbolic shape make sound waves bounce and intersect in wild ways. At operating plants, cooling towers help remove excess heat to keep systems running safely and efficiently. Bellefonte, built but never operated, is a great place for our interns to see first-hand the various parts of a nuclear power plant.
