Bangladesh has made tremendous progress in the last 50-plus years since its independence in 1971. It has made strides in female empowerment, seen infant mortality plunge, and significantly increased literacy rates. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, Bangladesh was one of the fastest growing economies in the world. In 2019, its GDP growth rate exceeded 8 percent. Its growth has been supported by a demographic dividend, stable macroeconomic conditions, and strong garment exports. The United States has played an important role in supporting Bangladesh’s socio-economic growth, sending more than $7 billion in development assistance since 1971.
Nevertheless, Bangladesh still sees ongoing challenges with vaccinations of its very dense populations, increased inequality brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, and the continued crisis management of Rohingya refugees. There are many ways for the United States to support Bangladesh with its Covid-19 recovery, while promoting Bangladesh’s sustainable growth for the next 50 years.
CSIS is pleased to welcome the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, Dr. AK Abdul Momen, and the USAID Deputy Administrator for Policy and Programming, Dr. Isobel Coleman to talk about the role of U.S. foreign assistance in Bangladesh’s success, and the future U.S.-Bangladesh partnership for the next 50 years.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of relations between the United States and Bangladesh. Over the past five decades, Bangladesh and the United States have developed a complex relationship that spans economic and security ties as well as transnational issues like climate change. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bangladesh had boasted a decade of impressive economic growth, and the United States remains the top destination for Bangladesh’s exports. As the Biden administration implements its Indo-Pacific strategy, Bangladesh’s relationships with neighboring India and China suggest that it will draw increasing interest from U.S. policymakers.
Join USIP and Bangladesh Embassy for a conversation with Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, His Excellency Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen, on the lessons learned from the last 50 years and the path ahead for U.S.-Bangladesh relations.

Very Important Message for NVR Applicants
As per circular of the Government, to obtain NVR, you are required to submit a copy of your Bangladeshi valid/expired passport or Dual Nationality Certificate or NID or Birth Registration Certificate as proof of your Bangladeshi origin. While sending your NVR application, you must attach one of these documents, not your previous NVR. Failure to send the required document will lead to rejection of the application.
The huge number of incomplete applications pending in the Embassy will be disposed of in a week by matching the documents received via emails; but the new incomplete applications received from 01 April 2022 onwards will be rejected and returned to the applicant as the time required to deal with them is slowing down the entire process of issuing NVR.
