African Union Representational Mission to the
United State of America Washington DC

PRESS RELEASE

THE AFRICAN UNION MISSION JOINS
PASSPORT DC’S AROUND THE WORLD TOUR IN THE U.S. CAPITAL

Washington DC, May 08: The African Union Mission in Washington D.C. opened its doors for American visitors as part of Passport DC’s Around the World Embassy Tour on May 2nd, 2015, promoting Africa as an exciting destination among prospective US tourists.

The program brought together performance, art, film, and a variety of crafts and jewelry for an exhilarating celebration of culture from Africa. Over 300 visitors were treated to traditional African hospitality with a sample of African authentic cuisine and a peek at the country's rich cultural heritage.

The event celebrated Africa’s vibrant music and dance traditions. There was drumming by Sirius Mastery and Shango Kwame, it was spectacular and delighted the audience. Ugandan singer and 2003 koa award winner George Okudi, and Lily Meka, from Cameroon were fabulous! The Simunye South African tribal dancers and the Youth of Ahava & Amara Life Foundation’s recitation and singing sealed the event with cheers!

The colorful painting exhibition captivated the attention of all visitors. Paulette Mpouma featured the African Memory Board Game – a family board game that teaches African history, geography and African heritage. The colourful handmade Bubu, headwear, bags and jewelry corners generated much excitement among the ladies.

Passport DC 2015 is a month-long journey around the world highlighting DC's thriving international diplomatic community and its lively and varied international culture. Celebrated annually in May, Passport DC is a citywide international cultural awareness program that enables residents and visitors to experience and explore the international culture of Embassies and other cultural institutions.

The African Union benefits tremendously from promoting its Mission to the general public/partners. Promoting the Mission helps create a brand image, build a presence and also attract the attention of new partners. It is a way of connecting with the people around and communicating the message of the Mission.

Special gratitude and appreciation to Community Liaison, Montgomery County Government, MD., Daniel Koroma and Publisher, Ras Maheteme Selassie (A. W. Edwards), Middle Passage Media; Master of Ceremony.
