Bard @ Old Malcolm X Survey/Encuesta sobre el sitio de Bard @ Old Malcolm X

Dear Congress Heights Community,

As you may know, DC Public Schools will be modernizing the Malcolm X Building at 1351 Alabama Avenue SE to house Bard Early College High School, a new district-wide high school program. You can read more about this exciting high school program here.

As a part of the modernization process, the DCPS Facilities team has been engaging with members of the school and neighborhood communities in order to consider a variety of stakeholders’ feedback as we select design concepts for the building and site. The presentation of these concepts (https://dck12.sharepoint.com/:b:/s/TESTdcps/ESQu8LX7Z9FKsIDA7tWTsFkBBJzGnaOtaDBZYDhYOoZChQ?e=DH0FD5), as well as notes (https://dck12.sharepoint.com/:b:/s/TESTdcps/EW9xpYmY82FCgLSUYR5ioWMBALsT7rCb2UKASrtINhR9oQ?e=4zVdIG) detailing the feedback, can be found on the project’s website (https://sites.google.com/a/dc.gov/dcps-school-modernizations/home/bard-high-school-early-college). Based on this feedback, the project team has elected to proceed with “Concept 2,” which highlights Bard’s exciting performing arts program as the heart of the school building.

DCPS strives to build schools that are centers of learning and community not only for the students and staff, but for the broader community as well. Understanding that this site will be a gathering place for the Congress Heights community, we want to ensure that in selecting a concept design for the site and field, we are considering a broad base of feedback.

The main option that we are looking at for this site is a multi-use space that accommodates a variety of activities for both the school and after-hours community use. This site features a basketball course, a walking/running track, as well as a field striped for pickup soccer games in the center of the track. Though we have also explored placing a regulation sized football field in this site, and while it can fit behind the school, its size does not allow for stands/bleachers, nor does it allow for other diverse uses of this site space. The track/multi-use field option allows for us to both focus on the school’s primary athletics programs, and provide the opportunity for many different kinds of community members to use the space. Before we make a final decision regarding the layout of this site, we are interested to hear what community activities you would like to see take place here.

Please take a moment to fill out this quick survey around the proposed site and its uses. We will have this survey open through Friday, 3/12. Feel free to share with other friends and neighbors, so that we can make sure the Congress Heights community is heard on this matter.

INFORMATION SHARING - This message has been sent to the families at Malcolm X ES @ Green because of an incident that occurred.

Dear Malcolm X Elementary School Parents and Families:

At Malcolm X, we highly value and are committed to fostering a safe and secure learning environment. A large part of that commitment is notifying parents of safety concerns when they arise.
Upon arrival this morning, we discovered there had been a break-in at our building overnight. We immediately contacted the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and identified areas of the building that were vandalized. MPD and DC Public Schools Police arrived quickly, collected a report of the incident, and launched their proceedings. To be clear, students were never in danger as this incident occurred before student arrival.
Impacted classes were temporarily relocated to the cafeteria as their classrooms were cleaned. There is an increased police presence at our school right now due to the active investigation, so please do not be alarmed. Students will return to their classrooms after lunch.
There will be no afterschool programming today, as we work to clean and ensure the security of our building.
The safety of our students is paramount at all times. If you have any questions related to this incident, please call the school office at (202) 645-3409 or contact me via email at [email protected].
Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,
Zara Berry-Young
Principal, Malcolm X Elementary School

In preparation for the upcoming school year, on Monday, July 15th at 11:30 am, Mayor Bowser is inviting families to join her at Mary’s Center in Ward 1 for free immunizations that will help protect our children from harmful disease. Immunization forms are now a part of DCPS’ enrollment forms, and this event will highlight the sites across the city where families can get free immunizations before August 26th. To prevent the spread of disease and keep our school communities healthy, all students attending DCPS, charter, private, and parochial schools must have up-to-date immunizations. All families are encouraged to join Mayor Bowser on Monday, so together, we can take this important step toward child healthcare.
