The American Association of Blacks in Energy National Conference registration is now open for our 43rd National Conference in Houston, TX on April 6 – April 9, 2020.
This year’s theme “Energy Re-imagined” will bring together energy industry experts, visionaries and corporate executives to lead discussions around emerging policies, technology advancements, innovative solutions and partnering opportunities designed to create a sustainable future.

AABE 2020 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Through the work of various members of the AABE National Scholarship Committee, Chapter Presidents, Regional Directors, local Scholarship Committees and many AABE volunteers nationwide, the AABE Scholarship Program is advertised and applications are solicited from eligible candidates nation-wide. AABE local chapters review the applications received and select local scholarship winners, from which the top-ranked candidates are forwarded to the National Scholarship Committee for consideration of regional and national awards.

Hands-On Learning for Future Blue Economy Leaders Link Arrow
NREL and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office have just launched the Marine Energy Collegiate Competition: Powering the Blue Economy to inspire student teams to innovate next-generation marine energy solutions. The competition provides structure and support for college and university programs to explore concepts related to desalination, aquaculture, and ocean observation market applications.
Culminating at the International Conference on Ocean Energy, which will be held in Washington D.C. in May 2020, the Marine Energy Collegiate Competition will showcase team pitches and design concepts while presenting networking and career development opportunities. Learn more about the competition on the upcoming informational webinar, scheduled for August 29 at 12pm ET.

The Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program (MSIPP) is currently accepting applications for the U.S. Department of Energy's 2018 MSIPP Internships, which are 10-week summer research internships for students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) related disciplines. Opportunities are offered at host laboratories under the guidance of senior research staff.

Program benefits:

The Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program (MSIPP) provides summer internships at U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories for students pursuing STEM degrees at colleges and universities with significant percentages of undergraduate minority students.

National Science Foundation, Division of Mathematical Sciences 2018 Mathematical Sciences Graduate Internship Program
The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) aims to provide opportunities to enrich the training of graduate students in the Mathematical Sciences through the provision of an NSF Mathematical Sciences Graduate Internship Program. This program will provide an opportunity for mathematical sciences, doctoral students, to participate in internships at national laboratories, industry and other approved facilities. Participation in an internship will provide hands-on experience of the use of mathematics in a nonacademic setting. The internships are aimed at students who are interested in understanding the application of advanced mathematical and statistical techniques to "real world" problems, regardless of whether the student plans to pursue an academic or non-academic career.
Appointed participants will receive a stipend allowance of $1,200 per week and round-trip transportation allowance up to $2,000 for authorized expenses. Participants are required to complete 10-weeks of participation between the months of May through September 2018.
10-Week internship: The internship is intended to introduce students to applications of mathematics outside of academia. The internships are intended for both students that plan to pursue careers in and outside of academia.
Eligibility Requirements
Students meeting the following conditions will be considered:
• Enrolled as a full-time graduate student at an accredited U.S. college or university during the 2017-2018 academic year
o Pursuing a doctoral degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics
• Possess a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.30 or higher on a 4.00 scale, including fall 2016 grades.
Areas of Discipline: Algebra & Number Theory, Analysis, Applied Mathematics, Combinatorics, Computational Mathematics, Foundations, Geometric Analysis, Mathematical Biology, Probability, Statistics, Topology.

BEAM MONTH RECAP: AABE Virginia Chapter BEAM Successful Event
Mission Tomorrow was the Richmond, Virginia region’s first interactive career exploration event for students in partnership with the Richmond Chamber of Commerce. AABE Virginia Chapter members supported Mission Tomorrow in various ways, including participation in the planning of Dominion’s sponsorship of the overall event, coordination of exhibitor booths, event set-up, volunteer registration, bus greeters/trackers, entrance traffickers, information table greeters, zone captains, navigators, general and lunch runners and food service support.
• This education/career day program occurred on October 27th and October 28th and hosted approximately 12,000 8th grade students from central Virginia at the Richmond International Raceway from 8:30am to 3:30pm on each day.
• The event provided an interactive learning environment for students to broaden their knowledge about various industries - including energy - and technology AND enhanced student exposure to various career opportunities within several fields, including the energy field.
• Energy/engineering/technology exhibitors included:
• Dominion Resources, Inc,
• Bridging Communities – Governor’s STEM Academy,
• Chesterfield County Career and Technical Center,
• Reynolds Community College,
• Science Museum of Virginia,
• Timmons Group,
