Rotary Club of Dupont Circle

Rotary Club of Dupont Circle Sponsored by Rotary International, Dupont Rotary is a service-oriented club in Washington, D.C. with a mission to serve its local and global communities.
(7)

Sponsored by Rotary International, Dupont Rotary is a service-oriented club comprised of 35+ committed individuals from the greater Washington, D.C. area, whose professional and service aspirations extend far beyond the confines of the Beltway. Since its chartering, the club has involved itself in numerous service projects at home and abroad--from partnering with local organizations in Washington to participating in peace and conflict resolution initiatives with partnering Rotary Clubs in Uganda and fundraising for a footbridge to increase schoolchildren's access to education in Zimbabwe, Dupont Rotary's area of influence is anything but small.

Mission: We use our professional diversity and international perspective to serve our community – both local and global – through hard work, innovation, and creativity. The synergy of the club lets us have a higher impact on the world than possible as an individual, while enriching us through fellowship.

Join us tonight at 7 pm EST on Zoom for our weekly meeting with speaker Stacey Samuel. A reporter and producer with over 20 years of experience, Stacey serves as the Executive Producer of Al Jazeera English flagship news and current affairs podcast, The Take. As a journalism fellow with the East-West Center and the German-American journalism exchange program: Radio In the American Sector (RIAS), Stacey’s focus has broadened to include covering international news and ultimately telling news through a global lens.

She considers herself a third-culture kid, as the daughter of immigrant parents from Haiti and Trinidad.

Prior to her current post, she was supervising editor for National Public Radio where her job was crafting the news that shaped our national discourse and highlighted the human condition. The stories she edited touched all the newsmagazine shows aired on NPR’s premium broadcasts that feature News, Arts & Culture coverage. Stacey speaks nationally to wide audiences about shaping and pitching stories. She sits on the board of the Washington Association of Black Journalists and is a long-time (NABJ) National Association of Black Journalists member.

Before radio, Ms. Samuel covered politics, national security and the Supreme Court for CNN, where she was part of the team that won an Emmy for the coverage of the 2012 U.S. presidential elections. She also has field produced for CBS Evening News and CBS This Morning. Her experience includes reporting on education for an ABC affiliate in Florida.

Stacey’s local reporting earned her an Edward R. Murrow award, amongst others. Along with award-winning talent, she has completed two HBO documentaries on children focusing on music and another dissecting diversity in America, which won Emmy Awards and numerous acknowledgments. Her many credits include stories she's produced for ABC's 20/20, CNN, COURT TV, HISTORY, Discovery Home & Health and A&E, WNBC, Lifetime, and Nickelodeon. A New York native she has a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University, an undergraduate degree in French and economics from Wesleyan University, and has taught journalism at the University of Florida #DupontRotary

At the heart of DC Nightlife and Culture is tomorrow's speaker Roger Sanchez. Currently, he is the Associate Director at the Mayor's Office of Nightlife and Culture @dcmonc and he advocates for DC's nightlife industry and culture. Roger Sanchez is a proud Afro-Dominican who has lived in Washington, DC since the age of 11. Since early on, his calling has been giving back to his community with public service as his life-long career. After graduating from American University, Mr. Sanchez began to work as a Language Access advocate with the Mayor's Office on Latino Affairs. As a former ELL student himself, he believed it was important to advocate for his community and ensure that timely services and resources DC Government provides were both accessible in Spanish and culturally appropriate. Finally, he's passionate about youth mentorship. He is a former scholar as well as a current mentor and board member of the Abramson Scholarship Foundation where he mentors DC public high school graduates attending a four-year institution. Saying farewell and see you again to Rotarian Les Schoene. A huge supporter of the Rotary Peace Fellowship and member of the Annandale Club in Virginia. A lifetime of service above self.
A cool thing when you read a headline and think "I was there!" I ran across this blurb in a public health listserv: WHO Director General Elect Welcomes New Funding for Polio Eradication (WHO) WHO Director-General elect, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has welcomed contributions and pledges of $1.2 billion for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The pledges were made at the Rotary Convention in Atlanta, USA which is being attended by 32 000 Rotarians from around the world. http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/releases/2017/polio-funding/en/
