Tonight, Dr. John Sever will speak (virtually) to the Rotary Club of Dupont Circle about PolioPlus and the current status of the polio eradication program. Link to the meeting: https://zoom.us/j/93436846999

As you know, this coincides with Rotary's focus on polio eradication for the month of October. Many of you also know what a treasure we have in Dr. Sever as an expert in this field, as well as a long time Rotarian who has served many roles in our District. His biography below will speak for itself.

Given his busy schedule, we felt lucky to schedule him as our guest speaker tonight, and wanted to extend the invitation to other clubs to join us as well.

FIVE FACTS ABOUT POLIO 💉🩸

1. Polio mainly affects children under age 5.
2. There is no cure, but polio is preventable with a vaccine.
3. Only three countries remain endemic.
4. We’ve reduced cases by 99.9% since 1988.
5. Until we end polio forever, every child is at risk.

Join us on TODAY, September 14th, at 7 pm to learn more about City Dogs & City Kitties - a wonderful 501(c)(3) organization that rescues adoptable cats and dogs in overcrowded and high-kill shelters, where resources are severely limited. City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue has saved over 8700 dogs and cats since they were founded in 2011. The organization is made up of a network of volunteers (most with full-time jobs) who foster cats and dogs in their homes. By finding these animals permanent and loving homes in the DC metropolitan area, we can enrich lives of humans and their pets.

Join us this Tuesday at 7pm on Zoom to hear from speaker Bryan Miles. Bryan is currently the Associate Director of the Bill Reid Centre (BRC) for Northwest Coast Studies at SFU where he has worked for the past 10 years. He is also working on an interdisciplinary PhD that explores the changing relationship between galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAMs) and Indigenous peoples. His research interests include the anthropology and ethnography on the Northwest Coast, Indigenous cultural heritage in digital contexts, and visual and material culture studies. His doctoral research investigates the cultural lives of heritage objects, and the use of new and emerging media technologies to record, document, safeguard, and create access to Northwest Coast visual cultural heritage.

Bryan completed his Master’s degree in sociocultural anthropology at Carleton University in 2008, and his M.A. thesis project examined the disjuncture between ecotourism principles and practice in the Mesoamerican country of Belize.

In his time with the Bill Reid Centre at SFU, Bryan has been involved in numerous Northwest Coast art and cultural heritage projects that draw on the visual histories of the coast and the work of historic and contemporary Northwest Coast artists. #DupontRotary #Rotary7620 #RotaryInternational #ServiceAboveSelf #ServeToChangeLives

A cool thing when you read a headline and think "I was there!" I ran across this blurb in a public health listserv: WHO Director General Elect Welcomes New Funding for Polio Eradication (WHO) WHO Director-General elect, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has welcomed contributions and pledges of $1.2 billion for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The pledges were made at the Rotary Convention in Atlanta, USA which is being attended by 32 000 Rotarians from around the world. http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/releases/2017/polio-funding/en/
