HPCON SHIFT ADVISORY

Naval District Washington (NDW) installations transitioned today from Health Protection Condition (HPCON) Charlie to Bravo, June 29.

NDW changed the HPCON as a result of declining COVID-19 transmission in the National Capital Region. NDW installations include: Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Naval Support Activity Washington, Naval Support Activity Bethesda, Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Naval Support Activity Annapolis, and Naval Support Activity South Potomac.

Yesterday E42 had to get its windshield replaced in La Plata, when E42 was traveling on Middletown Road back to DC & came across a MVA @ Middletown RD & McDaniel RD. Crew from E42 quickly went to work assessing patients and number of vehicles. E42’s officer notified Charles County that they were on scene and had a total of 3 patient’s and one of them being trapped. Once Squad 3 arrived on-scene crews worked together to successfully extricate the single patient trapped.

In the early 1800s, Washington Navy Yard quickly rose to prominence as the Navy’s largest shipbuilding and shipfitting facility. It constructed twenty-two vessels in just over a decade, and even USS Constitution sailed up to its piers for a refit before seeing combat in the War of 1812.

After the war, larger vessels were becoming a mainstay of the fleet. The Anacostia River was too shallow for these large ships to navigate, so the installation’s mission shifted away from the waterfront and toward ordnance and shipboard technology.

From anchors to engines, railway guns to optical systems, the work performed onboard Navy Yard evolved alongside the Navy itself. Our buildings still bear vestiges of their past use.

Take a look at this “then and now” photo series. Do you see any spots you recognize?

Happy 220th Birthday to the place we call home!

HAPPY 220th BIRTHDAY, WASHINGTON NAVY YARD!

Washington Navy Yard, the U.S. Navy’s oldest shore installation, was officially established on Oct. 2, 1799.

Under the supervision of Commodore Thomas Tingey, Navy Yard’s first commandant, the installation grew to become the Navy’s largest shipbuilding and shipfitting facility.

The ensuing years saw Navy Yard evolve to focus on the defense of Washington D.C., ordnance manufacturing, hull design and testing, and cutting-edge engineering. Today, the installation continues to support the mission by housing headquarters for numerous Navy commands.

Join us all week for daily glimpses into Washington Navy Yard’s history!
