What lakes are near you? What would you add to the list?

Lake Winnipeg has been named one of the world's most beautiful lakes by popular travel magazine, Condรฉ Nast Traveler!

"Lake Winnipeg, a serene getaway just an hour outside the city, captivates with its expansive white sand beaches and vibrant waters ideal for a variety of water sports. Celebrated for its scenic beauty and cultural significance to the First Nation and Mรฉtis communities, this lake stands as a sanctuary from overtourism, offering over a thousand miles of pristine shorelines."

As we take pride in this recognition, we must also embrace our duty to safeguard Lake Winnipeg's natural splendor and cultural heritage for generations to come.

'Anglers should be aware of regulations concerning invasive crayfish in different regions. ๐Ÿฆ๐ŸŒŠIn Ontario, it's illegal to transport crayfish across land, dead or alive, whether native or invasive, and they can only be used as bait in the water where they were caught. Manitoba prohibits the possession of any wild crayfish. Minnesota forbids the release of live rusty crayfish into public waters.'

Rusty crayfish (Faxonius rusticus) are large, aggressive crayfish native to the Ohio River Basin. Likely introduced by anglers discarding unused bait from other regions, this species has established itself in the Lake of the Woods and Rainy Lake, spreading widely across the basin. Their aggressive behaviour and voracious appetite enable them to outcompete native species, leading to a decline in biodiversity and native habitats. With females capable of carrying up to 200 fertilized eggs under their tails, just one introduction can spark a new population in a new area.

Anglers should be aware of regulations concerning this invasive crayfish in different regions. In Ontario, it's illegal to transport crayfish across land, dead or alive, whether native or invasive, and they can only be used as bait in the water where they were caught. Manitoba prohibits the possession of any wild crayfish. Minnesota forbids the release of live rusty crayfish into public waters.

If you suspect you've come across an aquatic invasive species, document it by taking a photo, noting your location, and reporting it to your local invasive species organization. This action can help prevent further spread!
