IJC - International Joint Commission Prevents and resolves disputes between Canada and United States under the Boundary Waters Treaty

The International Joint Commission was established under the Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909 to help the United States and Canada prevent and resolve disputes over the use of the waters the two countries share. Bruce Fellowship in Canadian Freshwater Policy at Toronto Metropolitan University to the Canadian Section of the International Joint Commission on Monday, June 1. Last week, the International Joint Commission was in Winnipeg, MB for . The recent and ongoing work of the IJC was well represented with presentations by IJC staff and project workgroup members. Commissioner Merrell-Ann Phare provided opening remarks at the Journal of Great Lakes Research awards ceremony. Thank you to the International Association of Great Lakes Research and the Society of Canadian Aquatic Sciences for hosting this year’s joint conference!

Please join the International Souris River Board (ISRB) on June 23rd for a public meeting in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. The event will be held both in-person and online via Teams, and will include a presentation on the International Joint Commission (IJC) and the ISRB. Current and summer hydrological conditions in the basin will be discussed, along with a summary of board initiatives.

Commissioner Sue Chiblow was honoured to be a speaker at this year's Turtle Island Science Conference at the University of Waterloo (May 24-26).

Dr. Chiblow delivered a presentation on how the IJC is modernizing to include Indigenous Science in US-Canada transboundary watershed management and was part of a panel on transforming education of present and future chemicals risk professionals.

The Conference was a great opportunity to hear from academics, Indigenous Knowledge Keepers, students, and community organizations on research, stories, and practices grounded in Indigenous Science.

The International St. Croix River Watershed Board (ISCRWB) is hosting a public meeting on May 27 at 6:00 pm EST at Washington County Community College in Calais, Maine, to discuss 2025-2026 water conditions and key projects, including the Woodland fish passage. The session, which covers dam operations and water quality, will also be accessible via MS Teams for virtual participants. Water levels of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River (Lake Ontario: 75.37 metres or 247.28 feet; Pointe-Claire: 21.91 metres or 71.88 feet) remain above long-term (1960-2025) average but well below the record high for this week.

The International Joint Commission is hiring!

The IJC is currently accepting applications for the Director of the Great Lakes Regional Office, located in Windsor, Ontario. This is a four-year term position.
The Director is accountable for the overall management of binationally staffed and funded Great Lakes Regional Office, with the purpose of supporting the IJC’s responsibilities under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement and the Commission’s broader mandate and priorities.

The first is Tuesday, June 2 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. (PT) in Nelson, British Columbia at the Prestige Lakeside Resort. The second will be Wednesday, June 3 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. (PDT) at the Best Western Kootenai River Inn in Bonners Ferry, Idaho.
