Congratulations to DVFR's August Member of the Month, Chris Ewok Carswell. As a DVFR seasonal Engine Boss, Ewok is a critical member of our Wildland Program. This season, he's led teams on the Cherry, Cottonwood, Swett, and Widemouth 2 Fires in Utah. His experience is a valuable asset to DVFR for deployments and training our teams.

🔥WILDLAND DEPLOYMENT UPDATE 🔥

After all five of DVFR's deployed crews and apparatus returned to Dammeron Valley, Rescue 131 was almost immediately re-deployed to Oregon, this time on the Paradise Fire.

On Sunday, Firefighters Alfred, Whiting, Broadbent, and Casper departed with DVFR's REMS unit to the Black Canyon Fire burning in the central part Utah.

2026 continues to be an active fire season, and with continued dry and hot conditions, DVFR's Wildland crews are a critical component of local, state, and federal firefighting efforts.

At 10:26AM today, DVFR was dispatched to a reported motorcycle accident on Gunlock Road. Engine 131, Brush 1351, and Battalion Chief 132 responded and arrived on scene to a single motorcyle rider who had departed the roadway and fallen down an appropriately 30-foot embankment. The rider was wearing a helmet.

The DVFR crew executed a low-angle extrication to bring the patient back to the roadway where Gold Cross Ambulance provided initial care before transfer to Intermountain Flight & Ambulance Services for air transport to Intermountain St. George Regional Hospital. The patient was transported with non-life threatening injuries in stable condition.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Thank you to the DVFR crew for executing the rope rescue extrication, as well as crews from Northwestern Special Service District, Gold Cross Ambulance, and Washington County Sheriff's Office - Utah for their responses.

We remind all riders who enjoy Gunlock Road and other rural roads in Washington County to observe posted speed limits and adjust your speed and riding style to weather and road conditions. DVFR wants everyone to enjoy their time on the road safely, so please wear a helmet.

DVFR's REMS team has been deployed on the Widemouth 2 Fire since 29 July. The Rapid Extraction Module Support (REMS) team is a highly specialized resource that accesses, stabilizes, and extracts an injured or ill firefighter from difficult terrain when normal ground evacuation isn't practical.

Capabilities for this team include:

🧗High- and low-angle rope rescue
🛟Patient packaging and litter operations
🏔️Remote/steep-terrain access
⛑️Technical extraction from canyons, slopes, rocks, or other difficult terrain
🚁Working with incident medical personnel and air resources to move a patient to an ambulance or helicopter
🌲Establishing rescue systems that can operate well away from roads or normal EMS access

As the first REMS team in Utah, we're extremely proud of the advanced skills and capabilities that our REMS team members bring to the wildland firefighting community. Thank you to Captain Monahan and Firefighters Herbst, Hill, and Reynolds for their hard work on what is now the second largest fire in Utah history.

Brush 1351 is also on the Widemouth 2 Fire in central Utah. The second largest wildfire in state history has been a challenge. With hot and dry conditions, our crews continue to represent Dammeron Valley and all of Southern Utah professionally.

DVFR currently has four crews deployed to the Widemouth 2 Fire in central Utah. We are proud to support wildland firefighting efforts within the State of Utah. More importantly, we recognize the dedication of our crews who spend time away from home and family to protect communities across the state when the need arises.

Our Widlland program is also critical to ensuring DVFR has the capabilities needed to protect our own community when wildfire threatens it. Our deployed crews gain valuable experience that is brought right back into the southern SR-18 communities so that we are ready when wildfire is in our own backyard.

Brush 1362 is DVFR's newest wildland engine. Captain Greenhalgh and Firefighters Casper, Wright, and Isidro have been deployed in it since 1 August. Thanks to this crew for their hard work and dedication.

Our hearts are heavy as we join the entire wildland fire and aviation community in mourning the loss of two helicopter crew members who were killed while supporting suppression efforts on the Widemouth 2 Fire near Richfield this week.

Wildland aviation crews work in some of the most demanding and dangerous conditions imaginable. They take on extraordinary risk to support firefighters on the ground and protect homes and communities threatened by wildfire. Their skills, courage, and commitment are critical to wildland operations and firefighter safety.

With 15 of our own members assigned to the Widemouth 2 Fire, this hits especially close to home. Our thoughts are with the families, friends, fellow crew members, and everyone assigned to the Widemouth 2 Fire who are grieving today.

From all of us at Dammeron Valley Fire & Rescue, we honor their service and sacrifice.

In cooperation with Washington County Water Conservancy District (WCWCD) and the Dammeron Valley Community Fire Council, a new drop-off location has been secured for yard waste to be chipped.

The new location is on the WCWCD Pinion Hills Wastewater Treatment site and will be open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 8:00AM to 12:00PM. The location will be locked at all other times; please do not trespass to drop items when the site is closed.

Be sure to follow the guidelines for dropping items at the site. Be respectful of the WCWCD property, and only proceed in the designated area guided by signage. DVFR's ambulance, Rescue 131, is currently deployed on the Bench Fire in western Oregon. The Bench Fire is burning more than 67K acres and is 66% contained. The fire started on 23 July and has resulted in numerous evacuations.

We're proud of our team representing Dammeron Valley and the State of Utah in Oregon and for the service they are providing the people and firefighters in those communities.
