🐝🎨 Pollinators and Paint 🎨🐝

Get ready to explore the fascinating world of pollination and beekeeping with Wilkes County 4-H! 🌎🍯

Participants will enjoy hands-on learning from local beekeeping professionals as we discover how pollinators help our world grow. Youth will also taste honey, create a fun bee-themed craft, and enjoy time learning in the outdoor classroom! 🐝🌼

What would you do if someone stopped breathing? If a small kitchen fire started? If a child in your care got hurt?

Those are big questions for anyone, but this week, Wilkes County 4-H'ers spent the day learning that being prepared doesn't have to be scary—it starts with knowledge, practice, and the confidence to step up when it matters most.

Our Emergency Preparedness program gave youth the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in CPR, basic first aid, babysitting safety, and fire extinguisher use. More importantly, they learned that even young people can make a real difference during an emergency.

A special thank you to **Jadrien Carnes of Wilkes County EMS** for teaching CPR and first aid and helping our youth understand how quick action and proper training can save lives.

Thank you to **Audra Armour, Wilkes County 4-H Agent**, for leading our Babysitting 101 session and sharing practical tips for caring for children safely and responsibly.

We are also grateful to **Kevin Tucker, Zach Moss, and Jack Davis of the Washington Fire Department** for certifying participants in fire extinguisher safety, providing a tour of the station and equipment, and giving youth an up-close look at the training and dedication required to serve their community.

The group enjoyed a pizza lunch at Fort Washington Park before wrapping up a day filled with learning, laughter, and experiences they won't soon forget.

One message echoed throughout the day: you don't have to wear a uniform to make a difference. Sometimes making a difference means knowing what to do, staying calm, and being ready to help when someone needs you most.

These young people left with certifications, new skills, and a little more confidence than they had when they arrived—and that's exactly what 4-H is all about.

Join us this summer for our Sustainable Landscape Series, a three-part educational program designed to help you create attractive, environmentally friendly landscapes that support wildlife, conserve resources, and thrive in Georgia’s climate.
Whether you're looking to reduce maintenance, attract beneficial insects, or better manage stormwater on your property, this series has something for you!

Program Schedule:

Native Plants
June 30 | 6:00 PM
Learn how native plants can reduce maintenance, support local wildlife, and add year-round beauty to your landscape. We'll discuss plant selection, site preparation, and how to incorporate native species into existing landscapes.

Pollinators
July 7 | 6:00 PM
Discover how to create a pollinator-friendly yard that supports our pollinators. Learn which plants provide the best food and habitat throughout the year.

Rain Gardens
July 14 | 6:00 PM
Explore how rain gardens can help manage stormwater runoff, reduce erosion, and add beauty to your landscape. We'll cover design basics, plant selection, and installation tips.

Don't forget that our Camp Cloverleaf Summer Camp Orientation Meeting is tonight, Monday, June 8, at 5:30 p.m. at the McGill Woodruff Ag Center in Washington, Georgia.

This meeting is an important opportunity for campers and parents to learn about camp expectations, review important information, and get answers to any questions before we head off for an exciting week at camp.

We encourage all campers and at least one parent/guardian to attend.

☀️ **Lake Dayz & Sun Rayz 2026** ☀️

One of Wilkes County 4-H's most popular summer traditions took place last week, and it was a beautiful day to be at the lake.

Wilkes County 4-H youth were joined by friends from Lincoln County 4-H for a day of fun, friendship, and outdoor adventure at Elijah Clark State Park. Recent rainfall had the lake looking better, creating perfect conditions for swimming, splashing, and making summer memories.

The day was filled with all the ingredients for a great summer adventure. Youth enjoyed friendly competition on the putt-putt course, games of beach volleyball, a picnic lunch with friends, good music, plenty of snacks, and lots of time swimming, playing, and splashing in the lake. By the end of the afternoon, there were sun-kissed noses, sandy feet, and plenty of smiles to show for a day well spent outdoors.

Programs like Lake Dayz & Sun Rayz are a wonderful reminder of the incredible resources available right here in Georgia. Our state parks truly are gems, offering opportunities for recreation, exploration, and quality time outdoors. Families looking for a summer adventure are encouraged to visit and enjoy all that Georgia's State Parks have to offer.

A special thank you goes to the parent volunteer chaperones who helped make the day possible. Their support, encouragement, and willingness to spend the day with our youth are greatly appreciated.

A special shout-out goes to our Teen Leaders, who continue to step up, lead by example, and invest in the younger members of our program. Watching older youth encourage, include, and guide the next generation of 4-H'ers is one of the best parts of what makes our program so special.

The laughter, friendships, and memories made throughout the day are exactly what make Lake Dayz & Sun Rayz a favorite year after year. 🌞🍀

🧵🍀 Sew Much More Than Sewing 🍀🧵

In a world where most things happen with the tap of a screen, sewing has a way of teaching a different lesson.

You can't rush it.

A machine has to be threaded. Fabric has to be lined up. Corners have to be turned carefully. Sometimes a stitch goes crooked and has to be taken out before you can move forward.

Yesterday, Wilkes County 4-H'ers spent the day learning those lessons and more during our Stitches Sew Fun workshop. With guidance from members of the Ladies Quilting Guild, participants learned sewing fundamentals and put their new skills to work creating festive Americana-themed potholders to take home.

But they didn't stop there.

Using those same newly learned skills, participants also created adult bibs that will be donated to residents of Tignall House Personal Care Home. It's a special thing to watch young people realize that something made with their own hands can make life a little easier for someone else.

The day was filled with encouragement, problem-solving, laughter, and plenty of proud moments as projects began to take shape. Along the way, participants enjoyed lunch, cookies, drinks, and the opportunity to spend time with new friends and mentors.

A special thank you to Becky Stover, Laura Toburen, Carol Jackson, Shea Wease, Elaine Filipiak, Janet Zimmerman, Pat Tippins, Lisa Sweet, Dee Dee Hartman, and Cindy Fox for sharing their time, talents, and patience with our 4-H'ers. We are also grateful to Simply Classic for providing sewing clips used throughout the workshop.

By the end of the day, everyone left with more than fabric and thread. They left with new skills, greater confidence, and the satisfaction that comes from creating something from start to finish.

And that's a lesson that never goes out of style.

In response, the USDA has compiled several resources including:

-Field identification guides and more.

Some afternoons are about learning a new skill. Some are about making a new friend. Yesterday's Flowers & Friends program gave Wilkes County 4-H'ers the chance to do both.

Youth and local senior citizens gathered for an afternoon of floral design, bouquet building, and bow making, but the real highlight wasn't the flowers. It was the conversations shared across generations, the laughter around the tables, and the connections made while creating something beautiful together.

Of course, no Southern gathering would be complete without a few treats. Participants enjoyed petits fours, cheese straws, and punch while swapping stories and spending time together.🍀🌼

At 4-H, we believe some of life's best lessons happen when people from different generations come together. Flowers & Friends was a wonderful reminder that community grows much like a garden—one relationship at a time.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the afternoon so special. We can't wait to see what blooms next.
