On Monday night, Brian Alligood was recognized for his career in public service, which includes more than a decade as our county manager. Alligood is retiring at the end of this month.

Leader Robert Reives presented Alligood with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, an award that recognizes exemplary service to the state of North Carolina. The Board of Commissioners presented Alligood with a proclamation recognizing his service to the County.

Alligood was appointed as Beaufort County Manager in April 2015. He had prior stops at the North Carolina Department of Transportation, Western Carolina University, Southwestern Community College, Granville County, the Town of Boiling Springs and the City of Washington.

Alligood guided the County through successes and challenges with exceptional leadership and patience. He had a key role in modernizing County practices, resulting in major operational and financial improvements. His experience in local government management, as well as the transportation and emergency services fields, proved invaluable as he supported department leaders through a variety of initiatives and challenges.

Please join us in expressing our sincere gratitude to Brian Alligood for his dedicated service to Beaufort County!

In November 2025, Beaufort County and the Town of Bath asked for public input on issues, needs, and opportunities related to flooding and other coastal hazards in the community via a public survey. In December 2025, a resilience table was included at the Bath Christmas Parade to gather input on community priorities. The county and town are now inviting the public to attend an open house to gather input on potential projects that will increase the resiliency to flooding impacts within the community. This event will focus on both the Town of Bath and the surrounding county areas referred to collectively as the โ€œBath Townshipโ€.

These meetings are part of the NC Resilient Coastal Communities Program (RCCP). The program facilitates a community-driven process for setting coastal resilience goals, assessing existing and needed local capacity, and identifying and prioritizing projects to enhance community resilience to coastal hazards. This initiative, funded through the N.C. General Assembly and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, provides funding to local governments to help overcome barriers in coastal resilience and adaptation planning, boost local government capacity, and support a proactive, sustainable, and equitable approach to coastal resilience planning and project implementation.

Draft flood resilience projects will be provided for public review, including potential investments in policy and regulatory actions, public education, infrastructure improvements, and nature-based projects. The meeting purpose is to obtain community input on potential projects that will increase the resiliency to flooding impacts within the community. Public input will be used to inform priority projects and actions.
