🔒 Digital Safety Series | Digital Safety Planning

If you are in an abusive relationship and thinking about your safety, your digital footprint is an important part of your safety plan.

Here are key steps to consider:

Before you leave:
✅ Create a new, private email account using a device your partner cannot access
✅ Change passwords to important accounts — banking, email, social media — from a safe device
✅ Remove your partner's access to shared accounts and subscriptions
✅ Download and save important documents (ID, financial records, lease) to a private cloud account or USB drive
✅ Turn off location sharing on your phone and in apps

Documenting abuse safely:
✅ Take photos or screenshots of threatening messages and store them in a private, password-protected account
✅ Note dates, times, and descriptions of incidents in a private journal or notes app your partner cannot access
✅ Consider emailing documentation to a trusted person or private account for safekeeping

Contacting advocates safely:
✅ Call or text from a friend's phone or a library computer when possible
✅ Use DASACC's webchat from a private browsing window
✅ Delete call history if your phone may be checked

🔒 Digital Safety Series | Protecting Your Privacy on Devices

Your phone and computer hold some of the most personal information about your life — and protecting that information is a critical part of staying safe.

Here are practical steps to protect your device privacy:

📱 On your phone:
✅ Use a strong PIN or password — not a pattern or face unlock that a partner could easily bypass
✅ Review which apps have access to your location, microphone, and camera
✅ Check for unfamiliar apps that may be monitoring your activity
✅ Turn off location sharing in individual apps unless absolutely necessary
✅ Log out of shared accounts (Google, Apple ID, Amazon) on devices your partner can access

💻 On your computer:
✅ Use a separate, private browser profile for sensitive searches
✅ Clear your browsing history regularly, or use incognito/private mode
✅ Check for remote access software that may have been installed without your knowledge
✅ Change passwords from a device your partner does not have access to

🔒 Digital Safety Series | Technology as a Tool of Abuse

Abuse doesn't only happen in person. Increasingly, abusers use technology to monitor, control, and intimidate — and many survivors don't realize it's happening until the pattern is well established.

Technology abuse can look like:
🔴 Reading your texts, emails, or social media messages without permission
🔴 Installing tracking apps or spyware on your phone or computer
🔴 Using shared accounts (streaming, email, banking) to monitor your activity
🔴 Demanding your passwords or threatening consequences if you change them
🔴 Tracking your location through a shared phone plan or hidden GPS device
🔴 Sending repeated, threatening, or harassing messages
🔴 Posting or threatening to post private images without consent
🔴 Monitoring your activity through smart home devices, cameras, or speakers
