We had a special visitor stop by South Strabane recently!

Frank Uram, who began serving with our department in 1962, stopped by with his wife while traveling back home to Florida. Captain Effinger and FF Fantauzzi had the opportunity to show them around the station, catch up on some department history, and take Frank for a ride in our new ladder truck.

A lot has changed in the fire service since 1962… the apparatus, equipment, technology, and even the community we serve… but the tradition of neighbors serving neighbors remains the same.

It’s always great to reconnect with those who helped build the foundation of the department we have today.

Safe travels back to Florida, Frank and Mrs. Uram, and thank you for stopping by!

We enjoyed the opportunity to host our friends from Washington Penn today for a team building lunch along with our mutual aid partners at Canton Township Fire & Rescue. We were able to spend time together and share our capabilities, as well as provide an in-depth look at our equipment and apparatus.

Washington Penn is a community business partner that operates industrial facilities in both South Strabane and Canton Townships. Establishing relationships like these before emergencies occur is crucial to public safety. Continued support from our local businesses and public-private partnerships are essential to emergency services.

**Vehicle Accident -I79**

Update @ 5:55pm: all vehicles have been removed from the roadway and units are clearing the scene; there were no major injuries at this incident.

Update @ 4:55pm: northbound lanes are open; southbound remains restricted

The north and south bound lanes of I79, just south of Racetrack Road are down to a single lane due to a vehicle accident. A tanker truck traveling south went over a hillside after attempting to avoid two tires that had dislodged from a tractor trailer traveling north. Multiple South Strabane fire units are on scene with State Police, Ambulance & Chair EMS, Inc., and WCDPS - Washington County Department of Public Safety for hazardous materials containment.

Expect delays in the area and seek alternate routes.

Just before noon today, South Strabane Firefighters were alerted for a possible commercial structure fire at Walmart in South Strabane Township. Truck 44-2 responded from the Oak Springs Station, Truck 44-1 from East Maiden, and the Chief, along with City of Washington Fire Department, and Canton Township Fire & Rescue.

Units arrived to find an extinguished fire that had started within an oven with a moderate smoke condition throughout the store. Firefighters from all three departments worked together to evacuated the store due to the toxic conditions, check for fire extension, and ventilate the building for the safety of their patrons and staff.

The building was deemed safe for occupancy just after 1pm. Portions of the store will be off-limits until they have been cleaned and restored.

Thanks to Ambulance & Chair EMS, Inc. for the assistance.
