In the last month, the Washington Fire Department has responded to several significant structure fires with victim rescues at multi-family structures. Incidents with this frequency are not common and can stretch resources thin. As a volunteer fire department, we train hard for exactly these kinds of challenging situations. This weekend tested us, and we’re proud of how everyone came together.
On Saturday, May 30, crews responded to a major fire at Chapters Living located at 1150 Newcastle Road. Fire had spread across the exterior of the three story building, into multiple units and the attic. Through quick teamwork with Washington Police, building staff, and civilians, about 40 residents and several pets were safely evacuated. Simultaneously fire crews had the fire knocked down within 15 minutes of arrival.
Less than 11 hours later on Sunday, May 31, we were back in action at 882-898 School Street. Fire blocked the only exit for several second-floor residents, requiring urgent ladder rescues by firefighters, police, and citizens. Three residents were transported to area hospitals, and our crews rescued multiple pets while bringing the fire under control in about an hour.
Each of our WFD volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel went above and beyond at each of these calls. No complaints, just pure hard work. We are very thankful for each and every one of our fire volunteers and paid EMS staff.
Chief Tyler Gee said:
“I would like to commend the bravery and heroism that was displayed at each one of these fires. The unified work between Fire, EMS, Police, Dispatchers, and the Citizens of Washington directly resulted in multiple lives being saved this weekend. I am extremely proud of the dedication within our community; and our mutual aid partners.”
A big thank you to East Peoria Fire Department, Morton Fire & EMS Local 4952, Germantown Hills Fire Department, Metamora Fire Department and Eureka-Goodfield Fire Protection District as well as City of Washington, Illinois, Washington, Illinois, Police Department, Tazewell County 911 - TC3 and many other individuals and organizations for your assistance this weekend.
Our prayers are with everyone affected as they begin to recover.
This is Washington Strong.
