The Washington Department has 12 members. The fire station, located at 42 Old Union Road, houses the department and six pieces of apparatus; two front-line pumpers, two tankers, an air/light/equipment truck, and a former military truck used in grass and woods fires. The department is a member of the Knox County Mutual Aid Association in which the 17 member towns may be called to support each othe
r with equipment and personnel in cases of emergency. We train and work most closely with Union, Somerville, Liberty, and Jefferson fire departments which provide mutual aid for major fires. Business Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 pm. Drills are conducted on the third and fourth Mondays of each month at 6:30 pm, and by special announcement. Active members are required to attend 50% of all training sessions, both by law and for their own safety. We are always seeking new members. Outdoor Fires
All outdoor fires regardless of size require a written burning permit on their person. Fires for cooking, warming, burning brush, grass, debris or incinerators fall into this category. Permits are issued free of charge by the Town Fire Warden or Deputy Warden. For information on burning or to obtain a burning permit call the following people:
Donald B. Grinnell, Town Fire Warden, 845-2226
Ken Boisse, Deputy Fire Warden, 845-2525
Burning is permitted at the following times with a written permit (dependent on wind conditions):
After 5:00 pm unless it is raining or there is snow covered ground. All burning permits are issued the day of the burn and are dependent upon the wind and weather conditions, time of day, length of burn, materials being burned, the number of fire permits issued for that day, and the number of personnel available in town.
