MEET YOUR WASHINGTON POLICE DEPARTMENT SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS
The new school year is underway, and we thought it was a good time to introduce the officers who spend their days getting to know our students, supporting our schools, and being part of the school community.
The Washington Police Department has proudly partnered with our schools for more than 30 years. Our D.A.R.E. program was established in the 1990s and provided the foundation for our School Resource Officer program, which began during the 1999-2000 school year at Washington High School. Today, four full-time SROs serve SDOW schools located within the City of Washington and in unincorporated Franklin County, as well as our in-town parochial schools.
SROs do much more than provide a law enforcement presence in our schools. They build relationships with students and staff, support school safety, teach D.A.R.E., provide education and guidance, and serve as trusted resources for students and families. By being present in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, at school events and throughout the community, our officers build trust and open communication. These relationships help identify concerns early, provide guidance when students need it, connect families with resources, and help prevent problems from becoming more serious.
Our goal is to address problems early, provide guidance and support, and prevent a situation from becoming a legal issue whenever possible. At the same time, we want students to know that police officers are approachable, helpful people they can turn to when they have a problem, feel unsafe, or simply need someone to talk to.
Our SROs are proud to be an active part of the school community. They are committed to building positive relationships, earning trust, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of the students they serve. We are equally proud of the strong partnerships we have built with the School District of Washington, our parochial schools, educators, families and, most importantly, our students.
