Tonight is International Bat Night, a 30-year tradition of celebrating the world's bats, organized by Eurobats in 1997. Bats control mosquito and other insect populations, reduing diseases and keeping pests under control for agriculture. They are also pollinators. We can thank bats for healthier crops, more biodiversity, and more resilient ecosystems. Do you know why bats can hang upside down? Because their blood flows wingtip to wingtip instead of from head to toe.

Dick Lindstrom was fresh out of the Navy in 1960 and looking for a job when his sister in Washougal told him the Camas paper mill was hiring. In this conversation with Julianne Lawrence, Dick talks about his nearly four decades at the mill, how the mill shaped the life of the entire region, and about events like the bitter 1964 strike that divided families and the broader community. In this excerpt, he describes why that strike was so devastating.
