Today we honor and remember fallen officers across the nation. To those who remain behind after the unthinkable: we see you and we mourn with you. Lean on those around you and never feel like your grief burdens those who love you and your fallen hero.

The picture below is from our wreath laying ceremony a few years ago. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we were unable to lay a wreath out front today. Thankfully, those circumstances didn't result in tragedy. It was certainly a poignant reminder, during National Police Week, that anything can happen.

Press Release- Vehicle Collision into Wasilla Police Department

On May 13, 2026, at approximately 4:45 p.m., 41-year-old Palmer resident Thomas Desalvo II drove his vehicle into the front entrance of the Wasilla Police Department.

Desalvo entered the parking lot from the north entrance, accelerated past the front of the building, and drove around the concrete barriers on the south side of the lot. He then traveled across the lawn and crashed into the building's front arctic entryway. The vehicle became wedged between the damaged front doors and the entryway walls, failing to breach the second set of vestibule doors.

At the time of the collision, one citizen was in the lobby; they were not injured.
Desalvo, who was wearing a mask, produced a can of bear spray from inside the vehicle and attempted to deploy it at an officer who had entered the lobby. The bear spray had no effect. Officers approached the vehicle and ordered Desalvo to keep his hands up. Desalvo complied and kept his hands visible until additional law enforcement arrived.

Multiple members of the Alaska State Troopers and the Wasilla Police Department took Desalvo into custody. Once detained, Desalvo assaulted an officer who was attempting to assist him with medical treatment. Desalvo also made statements indicating that he should have run the officers over.

During the arrest, officers observed multiple unusual wires inside the vehicle running to a dashboard switch and around the cabin. Out of an abundance of caution regarding a potential explosive device, the Wasilla Police Department and the adjacent Wasilla High School ball fields were evacuated. FBI Anchorage Special Agent Bomb Technicians (SABTs) and members of the Anchorage Bomb Squad responded to the scene to conduct a threat assessment. The vehicle was cleared of any explosive hazards, and it was determined there was no ongoing threat.

Desalvo was arrested and charged with the following offenses:
-Terroristic Threatening in the First Degree (3 counts)
-Burglary in the First Degree (1 count)
-Criminal Mischief in the First Degree (1 count)
-Assault in the Third Degree (1 count)
-Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree (1 count)
-Assault in the Fourth Degree (1 count)
-Reckless Endangerment (2 counts)

Desalvo was transported to the Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility, where he is currently held without bail. Additional charges may be added as the investigation continues.

The Wasilla Police Department extends its gratitude to the Alaska State Troopers, the FBI Anchorage Field Office, the ATF Anchorage Field Office, the Anchorage Police Department, the Central Mat-Su Fire Department, and Mat-Su Borough EMS for their swift and safe assistance in resolving this incident.

Press Release

On April 27, 2026, at approximately 11:17 p.m., MATCOM Public Safety Dispatch received a 911 call reporting that a male had been shot at a residence on Holiday Drive.

Officers from the Wasilla Police Department and Alaska State Troopers arrived on scene and located the victim, identified as 21-year-old Wasilla resident Dominic Murray, suffering from a single gunshot wound to the upper chest. Law enforcement and Mat-Su Borough EMS provided immediate life-saving measures. Murray was air-lifted to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, where he was later pronounced deceased.

During the initial on-scene investigation, police detained a 17-year-old male suspect. The suspect was cooperative and described the incident as an accident. Investigators determined that a party was occurring at the residence at the time of the shooting, and that alcohol and ma*****na were present.

The investigation revealed that the suspect and Murray were handling a pistol, and both had failed to ensure the firearm was unloaded. The suspect reported that he pulled the trigger while pointing the weapon at Murray’s chest, resulting in the fatal injury.

The 17-year-old suspect was arrested and remanded to the Mat-Su Youth Facility in Palmer. He has been charged with the following:
• Manslaughter
• Assault in the 1st Degree
• Misconduct Involving Weapons in the 4th Degree

The investigation remains ongoing. No further details are available at this time.

As part of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, today we recognize Drug Endangered Children (DEC) Awareness Day.

Children living in environments where substance misuse occurs face unique risks, including physical danger, neglect, and long-term developmental trauma. Our goal is to shift the focus from the caregiver's choices to the child's safety and well-being.

By fostering collaboration between community members, law enforcement, and social services, we can identify at-risk youth earlier and provide the intervention they need to thrive in a safe, stable home. Awareness saves lives.
