People always ask us what a “typical day” looks like for a Vermont Game Warden. The answer? There’s no such thing.

You might start the morning responding to a wildlife call or checking licenses, and by afternoon find yourself on a search and rescue operation, out on boat patrol, or navigating the woods by snowmobile. You might be teaching at a conservation camp in the morning, and arresting a poacher that night.

Different seasons, different terrain, same mission every single day.

As the Warden Service continues to investigate a dead female bear that was found dumped in Newbury, the Vermont Bear Hound Association reached out and would like to offer a $1000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the individual(s) involved with the shooting of the bear.

Public Help Needed: Black Bear Shot and Dumped in Connecticut River

NEWBURY, VT — State Game Wardens are asking the public for information after a dead black bear was found in the Connecticut River.
On the morning of July 13th, a lactating female black bear was dumped into the river from the Newbury Crossing Fishing Access Area. The bear had died from a gunshot wound.

If you have any information or saw anything suspicious near the Newbury Crossing area on or before July 13th, please reach out.

Thanks to a surge of tips submitted by the public, we have successfully identified and arrested the individual responsible for the illegal killing and wasting of the doe off South Stream Road.

The information you provided was instrumental in helping wardens piece together the timeline and track down the suspect.

🚨Request for Information in Identifying Poacher(s)🚨

On the morning of July 9th, a passerby reported finding a deceased deer in a field off South Stream Road in Bennington.

Wardens responded and located a deceased doe in the field. Someone had cut out the backstraps from the deer, leaving the rest of the carcass to waste.

Through the course of their investigation, Wardens determined the doe was shot illegally the night before.

It should be noted that the doe was lactating indicating a fawn or two is likely orphaned from this incident.

The Vermont Warden Service is asking the public for any information they may have regarding this incident.

Kudos to Wardens Lockerby and Kline, and K9s Rezi and Spike, who recently became the first law enforcement officers in Vermont to receive Wilderness SAR Air Scent Certifications!

The certification in this search and rescue discipline was certainly hard-earned. For 8-10 hours each day over the course of four weeks, the Wardens and K9s trained in the rain, across diverse landscapes, and at night to show the dogs as many environmental conditions as possible. And the result? The K9s are now trained to follow their noses and scan the air for human scent to find lost or vulnerable humans. When they lock onto the scent, the dog will follow it to the source, stay with the victim, and bark to alert the handler that it found someone. The benefit of this training is that the dogs don't need to rely on tracking footsteps or other physical marks of a trail, which means they can cover large search areas quickly, and even after a track has deteriorated.

Wardens Lockerby and Kline, and K9s Rezi and Spike, are ready to put their new skills to use and are available to assist in search and rescue recovery efforts. We can't wait to see the amazing work they'll do!
