This past Saturday, The UnGroup Society hosted the 13th Annual Greater Waterbury Spirit of Unity Festival at Library Park, bringing residents together for a day of community and celebration! Mayor Pernerewski joined the festivities and presented members of The UnGroup Society with a citation recognizing their continued dedication to organizing this event and serving our community.

Thank you to The UnGroup Society for continuing to bring Waterbury together, and to everyone who came out and enjoyed another great Spirit of Unity Festival!

What started as a simple summer lemonade stand has grown into an inspiring local success story!

J&J Lemonade, founded by young entrepreneurs Jeremiah and Josiah, was inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit in their family. With encouragement from their parents’ trucking business and their sister Anayah’s dog walking and grooming business, the brothers decided it was time to build something of their own.Thanks to the incredible support of the Waterbury community, their lemonade stand quickly grew, with Anayah joining the team. Together, they’ve learned valuable lessons in business, marketing, customer service, financial responsibility, teamwork, and hard work.

The Mayor’s Office was proud to recognize Jeremiah, Josiah, and Anayah for their entrepreneurial spirit and determination. Their story is a great reminder that you’re never too young to dream big, work hard, and turn an idea into something special!

UPDATE: WATER HAS BEEN RESTORED
Main Break on Frost Road

The City of Waterbury is responding to a water main break at 546 Frost Road that has left approximately 80 properties without water service.

The water shutdown began at approximately 10:15 a.m. Crews are currently awaiting the arrival of Eversource Gas to locate gas service before repair work can begin.

Roads affected:
• Rockridge Road
• Munson Road
• Peterson Avenue
• Frost Road from Meriden Road to Selah Street

The estimated repair time is 6 to 8 hours once work begins.

Residents in the affected area are asked to use caution and expect delays while crews work to make the necessary repairs. Additional updates will be provided as information becomes available.

Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski, Jr. joined Governor Ned Lamont, Connecticut Department of Housing Commissioner Seila Mosquera-Bruno, former Mayor Neil O’Leary, developer Joe Gramando and community partners to announce a major investment in the transformation of the former St. Mary’s School into Cole Street Commons.

The project will transform the long-vacant historic property into 47 apartments for healthcare workers, located directly across from St. Mary’s Hospital and within walking distance of downtown.

The State of Connecticut is providing $11.6 million in funding for Phase I, including $5.5 million through the state’s Healthcare Housing Fund. The investment will help address the connection between housing and the healthcare workforce while preserving an important piece of Waterbury’s history.

The city acquired the property in 2023 under the leadership of former Mayor O’Leary with the goal of finding a way to bring the vacant campus back to life. Today, that vision is moving forward through a strong partnership between state and local government, private development and community partners.

Cole Street Commons represents an important investment in Waterbury’s neighborhoods, economy and healthcare workforce, while giving a historic property a new purpose for generations to come.

Yesterday, we celebrated the groundbreaking of NEST’s continued Adams Street Development Project in the Crownbrook neighborhood!

This development will bring new, affordable homeownership opportunities to Waterbury families while continuing the revitalization of the neighborhood. Mayor Pernerewski’s Chief of Staff, Joe Geary, spoke about the strong partnership between the City of Waterbury and NEST and how, by working together, we can continue building more quality, affordable housing to meet the needs of our residents.

A special thank you to Kevin Taylor, Executive Director of NEST, and the entire NEST team for their continued investment in Waterbury and commitment to expanding housing opportunities across our city.

We look forward to seeing these new homes take shape!

On Friday, the City celebrated the opening of the new PAL Splash Pad at 11 Branch Street, giving children and families another fun and welcoming space to enjoy together.

Mayor Pernerewski joined Police Chief Spagnolo, and community members to officially flip the switch and turn on the water! The new splash pad is all about bringing neighbors together, creating positive spaces for our youth, and giving families a place to beat the summer heat. A special thank you to the State of Connecticut, the Waterbury Development Corporation, the CT Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), the Elisha Leavenworth Foundation, PAL, and everyone who helped bring this project to life. Partnerships like these continue to make investments in our neighborhoods and create spaces our entire community can enjoy.

We hope families from across Waterbury get the chance to stop by, cool off, and make a splash!

This morning, Mayor Pernerewski joined Superintendent Dr. Schwartz, Board of Education President Brown, Commissioners Lopez and Bowen, and our Deputy Superintendents to welcome students back for another exciting school year! The group arrived before the first bell and was greeted by excited students ready to get back into the classroom and start learning. Throughout the morning, they visited Crosby High School, Wallace Middle School, and Chase Elementary School, meeting with students, teachers, and staff along the way. The first day of school is an opportunity for a fresh start, new experiences, and new goals. We’re excited to see what our students accomplish in the year ahead!

Thank you to all of our teachers, administrators, parents, and students for starting the school year off right. We hope you have a great year and achieve every goal you’ve set for yourself!
