We serve 19 cities and towns in the Naugatuck Valley. Welcome to the official page of the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments!

Through collaboration with municipalities, we address shared challenges such as transportation improvements, environmental issues, and community planning to strengthen the region. At the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments (NVCOG), we are responsible for regional planning across 19 towns in the Naugatuck Valley Planning Region, collaborating with local leaders to maximize resources and address

common challenges. Our dedicated team of professionals works diligently on transportation efforts, environmental projects, brownfields redevelopment, and community planning to create thriving communities that are safe and healthy. This page serves as a space to keep the public informed about our efforts, events, initiatives, and decisions that
impact our region. Our goal is to foster transparency, encourage civic engagement, and provide important
updates on regional policies and services. NVCOG reserves the right to delete submissions that do not meet the purpose of this page as set out above. The following are examples of unacceptable social networking content and comments. Please note this list is not intended to be all-inclusive:

1. Profane or obscene language or content as determined by the profanity filters offered through each social media platform (such posts result in the comment/content being blocked through the social media’s profanity filter).

2. Any form of hate speech, personal attacks or content that promotes, fosters, or perpetrates discrimination on the basis of race, color, age, religion, gender, national origin, physical or mental disability, or sexual orientation, or any other protected class of people.

3. Advocation of illegal activity; or those that compromise safety or security of the public.

The Greater Waterbury Transit District (GWTD) recently participated in New Opportunities Inc.'s Senior Expo & Block Party on the Waterbury Green, sharing information about transportation services and community resources available to older adults and people with disabilities throughout the region.

Among the resources highlighted was GWTD's Dial-A-Ride and CT transit's ADA paratransit service, operated by Northeast Transportation. For individuals who may be unable to use traditional fixed-route transit services, the programs provide accessible transportation options that help residents connect to appointments, services, and other destination.

Eligible riders in Cheshire, Middlebury, Naugatuck, Prospect, Waterbury, Watertown, Wolcott and Woodbury may use GWTD's Dial-A-Ride services. Residents interested in learning more about eligibility requirements or scheduling transportation can visit the Dial-A-Ride – Greater Waterbury Transit District website at https://gwtd.org/dial-a-ride/

NVCOG supports GWTD through regional transit planning and administration, including hosting the district's quarterly meetings and coordinating transportation initiatives that help improve mobility throughout the region.

Throughout the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments region and all of Connecticut, we are linked by water. When it rains, water makes its way through the watershed and into Long Island Sound. If rain falls on “impervious surfaces” like roads, parking lots, and driveways, stormwater runoff is created. This runoff carries harmful contaminants, such as chemicals and bacteria, into our waters. When water becomes polluted, both wildlife and human health are threatened.

You can help reduce water pollution by making these tips a part of your summer routine!

These small steps can make a huge impact on our water quality, helping protect local ecosystems and community health while preserving our waterways for future generations.

On August 6, the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments (NVCOG), state and local officials, and organizations gathered at 698 South Main Street in Waterbury to highlight funding awarded through round 24 of the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development's Brownfield and Remediation and Development Program.

During the press conference, Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz celebrated DECD's Brownfield and Remediation and Development Program for awarding the Waterbury Development Corporation with a $4 million grant for phase 3 of the abatement and remediation of the 698 South Main Street site. The 17.46-acre piece of land was once the home of the Anamet network of factory buildings and produced flexible metal hoses. Also highlighted was the $200,000 funding awarded to the NVCOG for the assessment of the 2.75-acre site at 389 Meadow Street to help the city determine the remediation needed for a mixed-use redevelopment.

Through state-issued brownfields funding awarded to NVCOG, the agency can support assessment and cleanup of sites in 24 cities and towns within the Regional Brownfields Partnership region. Those projects give a helping hand to communities working to reclaim and revitalize properties, bringing new opportunities and economic vitality to places where blighted properties once stood.

Did you know that small actions you take every day can help protect your community's water quality?

August is National Water Quality Month and this summer, NVCOG Environmental Planning staff and interns are working to support the stormwater management program! Recently, the team visited the Town of Thomaston to map the stormwater system in Downtown.

On Saturday, we had the pleasure of attending the Summer Family Fun Day on the Naugatuck River Greenway (NRG) in Waterbury, hosted by Friends of the Waterbury Greenway . The event featured a magic show, giveaways, delicious food, and opportunities for residents to connect with Waterbury-based organizations and learn about valuable programs and resources.

Throughout the day, we shared updates on efforts to expand access and recreational opportunities along the NRG and highlighted the Connecticut Trail Finder, a statewide resource that helps people discover trails and outdoor destinations across Connecticut.

It was a great day celebrating community and our natural resources, and we look forward to joining residents and partners again at future events along the Greenway!

Join us for this year’s first Summer Family Fun Day on the Greenway! We invite members of the community to come out and enjoy an afternoon of family fun with the Friends of the Waterbury Greenway, Waterbury Police Department, Waterbury PAL, and other community organizations.

Location: Platts Mill Road & South Main Street
Date: Saturday, August 1st (Rain Date: Sunday, August 2nd)
Time: 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM

This fun-filled event will feature kids activities, a magician, food, ice cream, and so much more.

The first 50 students to attend in person will receive a FREE backpack filled with school supplies. Bring the whole family and join us for a great day on the Greenway!

The Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments (NVCOG) has launched an Integrated Mobility and Community Planning (IMCP) team, marking the first merger of its kind among Connecticut Councils of Governments. This initiative aims to align transportation and land-use planning across 19 municipalities to foster sustainable growth, safer streets, and enhanced community connectivity.
