Vermont Hazardous Materials Response Team

Vermont Hazardous Materials Response Team The State of Vermont HAZMAT Team was created in 1995 to assist all fire departments in Vermont when managing hazardous materials incidents.

Mission of the VTHazardous Materials Response Team is to offer the highest possible level of protection to the citizens and visitors of the State of VT from chemical, biological and radiological releases whether the release is intentional or accidental. The team’s authorizing legislation as well as the creation of the HAZMAT Team Chief can be found in Vermont Statutes, 20 V.S.A. § 33. The purpose

for the Team’s creation was and remains to work with the fire chiefs before, during and after hazardous materials events in their municipalities. By having HAZMAT Technicians located across the entire State supported with three HAZMAT response vehicles, the Vermont HAZMAT Response Team (VHMRT) endeavors to have highly trained and equipped personnel on scene quickly when requested by the Incident Commander. In addition to the HAZMAT trucks, the Team can call upon any of the twenty HAZMAT trailers positioned in local fire departments around the State. These trailers contain equipment which may be used for operations level HAZMAT response as well as to perform “gross” and “technical” decontamination. The Team is housed in the Division of Fire Safety in the Department of Public Safety. To request the HAZMAT TEAM for an emergency call 1.800.641.5005

During National Police Week, the Vermont State Hazardous Materials Response Team stands in solidarity with our law enforcement partners across Vermont and the nation.

Every day, members of the Vermont State Police and local, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies respond to difficult and dangerous situations to protect our communities. Their professionalism, dedication, and willingness to serve are critical to public safety throughout Vermont.

The Vermont State Hazmat Team regularly works alongside law enforcement agencies during hazardous materials incidents, suspicious substance investigations, transportation emergencies, illicit laboratory responses, and major public safety events. These partnerships are essential to keeping responders and the public safe.

During this National Police Week, we honor the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and recognize the continued service of those who wear the badge today.

Thank you to all law enforcement officers for your service, sacrifice, and partnership.

Green Up Day is a Vermont tradition—and safety comes first. 🌲🧤

While cleaning up our roadsides and communities, please wear gloves, sturdy footwear, and bright clothing when working near traffic. If you come across drums, fuel cans, chemicals, propane cylinders, or any unknown containers, do not touch or move them.

Back away, keep others clear, and notify local officials.

Help keep Vermont green while keeping yourself safe. When in doubt, leave it out and call it in.

🚨 Day 2 – Hazmat Training at the Fire Academy 🚨

Day 2 of hazardous materials training focused on hands-on, scenario-based evolutions, including roll-over prop drills and chlorine “C” kit operations.

These complex training scenarios incorporate all elements of a full State Hazmat Team response—from size-up and air monitoring to leak control, product transfer, and coordinated team operations.

Training at this level ensures our technicians are prepared to manage high-risk incidents safely, effectively, and as a coordinated statewide resource.

🚨 Hazmat Training at the VT Fire Academy 🚨

Today the team focused on maintaining and strengthening equipment proficiency to ensure readiness and safety on every response.

Technicians focused on core response skills such as air monitoring, leak control, and overpacking, key tasks required to safely and effectively manage hazardous materials incidents.

They also used air monitoring equipment and decontamination systems, both of which play a critical role in protecting responders and the communities we serve.

Training like this reinforces our commitment to preparedness, teamwork, and excellence in hazardous materials response across Vermont.
