Two personnel joined our Chief this week at the Center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston, AL completing a weeklong training course on emergency medical operations for chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive type incidents. This course provides EMS personnel with the knowledge and skills to treat, triage, and decontaminate patients and responders involved in these types of incidents.

In the final part of their training, they had the unique opportunity to participate in live agent chemical and biological weapon response training in the COBRA facility, the nation’s only live agent training facility for first responders. Responders were able to execute their skills in the presence of nerve, blister, and biological agents under the supervision of instructors to make the training as realistic as it gets.

Thank you FEMA Federal Emergency Management Agency for funding this critical training experience for us.

Last Sunday (8/2) just after 1500 hours, our Backcountry Rescue Team was activated for an injured hiker on Camel's Hump. 12 members of our team and our UTV off-road vehicle assembled at the Monroe Trailhead. The patient was initially pinged about 2 miles up from the trailhead and was making an effort to continue down the trail despite the ankle injury. Our hasty team mobilized on foot and made it to the patient where they rendered aid before continuing to assist them to a rendezvous point with our UTV. In the meantime, a litter team capable of a full carry-out was deployed in the event patient circumstances changed. The patient was successfully extricated from the mountain via UTV and was transported by personal vehicle to the hospital for treatment of a minor injury.

Waterbury Ambulance and Backcountry Rescue personnel have been conducting rescues on Camel's Hump for more than 3 decades. Our team is well-positioned for providing timely and efficient emergency care in the backcountry with a moment's notice. Backcountry rescue is always performed at no cost to the patient. If you would like to donate to our team to support their mission, visit us online at https://www.waterburyambulance.org/backcountry-donate.html
