Drayton Plains Nature Center

Drayton Plains Nature Center Trails & parking lot are open dawn to dusk, year-round.

The Drayton Plains Nature Center's 138-acres, and expanse of nearly 1 mile in length, exhibits our Earth's finest treasure - Nature. In 1967 the Drayton Plains Nature Center opened its doors as a privately owned, non-profit Center dedicated to protect, preserve, educate and be enjoyed by its members and friends. Today, the 138-acre Nature Center is operated by the Waterford Parks and Recreation De

partment with the support of the Friends of the Nature Center. The former hatchery building is the Interpretive Center which houses displays of specimens in their natural habitat. The grounds contain approximately 6 km of designated trails which have been routed around ponds, through woodlands and meadows, with interpretive signs to aid in your enjoyment.

🐸💚 Nature Tots is off to a hopping start!
We had so much fun at our first program of the season learning about the life cycle of a frog, reading stories, making our own frog eggs and tadpoles, and enjoying nature together.
Join us for our next Nature Tots adventure on June 20th at 11am where we will explore colors and rainbows together!🌈✨

It is turtle season! Keep an 👀 out for 🐢 crossings!

The morning commute can be tough, but it can be even tougher when you're a turtle. Turtles have places to go this time of year, and they could use our help to get there safely. Here’s how:

Only help a turtle cross the road if it’s safe for you, the turtle, and other drivers. Don’t try to stop fast-moving traffic on a busy road.

Pick up the turtle securely by its shell, and watch out for the claws, the biting end, and the yucky end. Turtles will scratch, bite and relieve themselves when they feel threatened.

Move the turtle in the direction they were traveling and point them away from the road.

Wear gloves if you have some on hand and/or be sure to wash your hands after touching a turtle.

Never pick up a turtle by its tail! You can cause permanent injuries. If you can’t pick up a turtle safely, you can use a stick, shovel or broom to nudge it in the direction it needs to go.

You might be wondering, why does the turtle cross the road? To find a mate, a suitable nesting site, new food sources, and other turtle activities. Thanks for helping Michigan’s turtles get where they need to go!
