At Mac’s Drive In in Waterloo, New York you can step straight into a true throwback roadside stop that’s been serving up classic American food since 1961, holding onto the kind of experience that has mostly disappeared over time. Located along the historic Routes 5 & 20 just outside the village, this long-running, family-owned spot lets you choose how you want to enjoy it...pull in for car-hop service, grab a stool at the counter, or sit down inside. Burgers are made fresh on a flat-top grill right in front of you, and the fries are hand-cut and never frozen, giving them that crisp, real-deal taste people come back for.

Favorites here include onion rings, fried haddock, red hots, and hearty garbage plates, all paired perfectly with frosted mug root beer poured from the barrel along with thick shakes and classic floats. Waterloo itself is known as the birthplace of Memorial Day, first officially observed here in 1866, adding a layer of history to your visit, while this stretch of roadway traces back to early travel routes that once connected communities across New York. Mac’s keeps things simple and old-school, even down to being cash only, though there is an ATM on site to keep things easy.

The Purple Heart Medal is presented to service members who have been wounded or killed as a result of enemy action while serving in a branch of the United States Military. The Purple Heart is the first and oldest United States military honor, established by George Washington in 1782. In Waterloo, those individuals being recognized will have their names engraved on the Purple Heart Monument in Lafayette Park.
This local initiative reflects the Village of Waterloo’s commitment to honor and recognize those remarkable individuals who have been bestowed with this award for their service to our Nation.
According to the Village of Waterloo Purple Heart Committee, the deadline for applications to be received is Friday, May 15th. Applications to recognize Purple Heart recipients are available in the Waterloo Village office at 41 West Main Street, in the Waterloo Town office located at 66 Virginia Street and at the Seneca County Veterans Department located in the Seneca County Office Building, 1 DiPronio Drive in Waterloo.
Members of the Waterloo Purple Heart Committee are: Chairperson Joan Sullivan-Grela, Director of the Seneca County Veterans Service Office Bridget Saunders, former Village Board Member Gina Suffredini, Waterloo Town Clerk Rose Marie Marsh and Eva Lynne Smith.
Proof of military service is required. A copy of the individual’s DD-214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) or DD-215 (Correction to DD-214), which should list the award in the decorations section. If the award is not on the DD-214, documentation such as General or Permanent Orders, the Purple Heart Certificate, or a VA verification letter is required.
Questions regarding eligibility for inclusion on the memorial in LaFayette Park should be directed to Don Northrup, Waterloo Village Administrator, by calling 315-539-9131.
