💉🚑 Our Mason City Paramedic Cohort is putting in the work!

This week, students got hands-on practice developing their IV skills as they continue building the foundation for a great year!

A huge thank you to Charla DiCamillo with MercyOne North Iowa and Barb Godfrey for spending time with our students, completing their MercyOne orientation and N95 fit testing. We greatly appreciate them taking the time to help our students prepare for their upcoming clinical experiences!

Great work, Mason City — lots more to come!

🚑 Our 2026–2027 Paramedic Cohort is officially underway!

We’re excited to welcome this year’s group of future paramedics! The first week is in the books, and along with getting down to work, they’ve already managed to have a little fun along the way—as these pictures clearly show. 😄

There’s a lot of learning, hard work, clinical experience, and probably a few long nights ahead, but we’re excited to see where this year takes them.

Welcome to the Paramedic Program, Class of 2026–2027! 🚑

🚑 And they’re off!

We’re excited to welcome 34 new EMT students to Hawkeye Community College as they begin their journey into EMS!

Every great EMT starts with the fundamentals. This week, our students are getting hands-on and learning some of the basics of patient movement and transportation, including cot operations and stair chair operations.

These skills may look simple, but learning to move patients safely, communicate effectively with a partner, and operate equipment confidently lays the foundation for everything that comes next.

There’s a lot to learn between today and becoming an EMT—but these 34 students have officially taken their first steps.

Welcome to EMS, Class of Fall 2026! 🚑

Thank you, John Cockrell! After 12 years of shaping the future of EMS education at Hawkeye Community College, John is moving on to his next adventure.

He has been essential in guiding our program through a period of major growth. Under his leadership, 164 Hawkeye paramedic graduates have entered the field, each completing over 1,900 instructional hours and making more that 50,000+ patient contacts during hours of clinical time.

As Dr. Fangman, our Medical Director, shared: "John has done a pretty incredible job of leading this program through a time of change. He brought calm at time of chaos...the strength of the program can very directly be attributed to how well John has done."

Thank you, John, for building a program at Hawkeye that will serve our region for years to come!🚑

Congrats paramedic students! So proud of you and all your hard work! 🧡💙

Meet Hawkeye’s Summer EMT class! They are making the most of every minute as they work through the Emergency Medical Technician program.

Because the summer term is shorter, students move through the same required curriculum in a condensed timeframe, balancing classroom instruction, hands-on skills practice, simulations, and clinical experiences at an intensive pace. Their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to learning are on full display each day.

We are proud to help prepare the next generation of EMS professionals to serve our communities.

Please join us in wishing these students continued success as they progress through the program!
