These Six Steps Can Help Save Your Child's Sight

Do not let your child play with fireworks, even if his/her friends are setting them off. Sparklers burn at 1800 degrees Farenheit, and bottle rockets can stray off course or throw shrapnel when they explode.
If an accident does occur, minimize the damage to the eye. In the event of an eye emergency:

*Do not rub the eye. Rubbing the eye may increase bleeding or make the injury worse.
*Do not attempt to rinse out the eye. This can be even more damaging than rubbing.
*Do not apply pressure to the eye itself. Holding or taping a foam cup or the bottom of a juice carton to the eye are just two tips. Protecting the eye from further contact with any item, including the child’s hand, is the goal.
*Do not stop for medicine! Over-the-counter pain relievers will not do much to relieve pain. Aspirin (should never be given to children) and ibuprofen can thin the blood, increasing bleeding. Take the child to the emergency room at once – this is more important than stopping for a pain reliever.
*Do not apply ointment. Ointment, which may not be sterile, makes the area around the eye slippery and harder for the doctor to examine.
Seek medical attention immediately.

Where are button batteries in your home? Look for risks in items like these:
● Remotes and key fobs
● Flameless candles
● Hearing aids
● Tracking devices
● Kitchen and bathroom scales
● Toys and electronics

If you have little kids (or they visit your home), button batteries are a big injury risk. Look for products with screw-secured battery compartments. Check them regularly to make sure the compartments are still tightly closed.

June 12th is National Button Battery Awareness Day But poison i g prevention is year-round.
β€œI didn’t know he had swallowed something.” β€œI don’t know where she even got it!”
Sound familiar? Kids are pros at finding things we overlookβ€”like button batteries. Keep batteries out of sight and reach of children, ideally in a locked cabinet or container.

πŸŒ±πŸ† BIG NEWS FOR TRI-COUNTY HEAD START! πŸ†πŸŒ±

We are incredibly honored to announce that Tri-County Head Start has been named the 2026 Farm to Early Care & Education Program of the Year by the Iowa Farm to School and Early Care Coalition! πŸŽ‰

This award recognizes our commitment to helping children build healthy habits through hands-on learning, gardening, nutrition education, local food experiences, family engagement, and community partnerships.

From planting seeds in our classrooms and gardens, to Tasty Tuesdays, cooking activities, and introducing children to locally sourced foods, we believe every experience helps grow a lifelong connection to healthy living.

This recognition belongs to our dedicated staff, supportive families, community partners, and most importantly, the amazing children who inspire us every day. ❀️

Thank you to everyone who helps us create meaningful opportunities for children to learn, grow, and thrive.

🌱 Together, we’re planting seeds for a healthier futureβ€”one child at a time.

🌟 Celebrating the Stars Who Make a Difference Every Day! 🌟

Tri-County Head Start recently gathered to honor the incredible teachers, staff, and team members who go above and beyond for the children and families we serve during our Golden Stars Awards & Staff Appreciation Ceremony.

From years of dedicated service to outstanding achievements, this special event was a chance to recognize the passion, commitment, and heart that help make our program shine.

Every smile encouraged, every lesson taught, every family supported, and every child empowered starts with the amazing people behind Tri-County Head Start.

Congratulations to all of this year's Golden Stars recipients and thank you to our entire team for the impact you make each and every day. You are the reason our stars shine so bright! ⭐
