Popular Question of the Day!

Is the cob and husk from corn on the cob OK to put in my YDW bin?

Answer: Yes and No. The husk is completely fine as part of the composting process. The cob would be considered waste and needs to be disposed of in the garbage.

The cob is more considered as inedible food waste. It is a compostable product but it can take several months to compost and is not really part of the program we have for the City of Waterloo.

PLEASE do NOT use carts that are not registered to your address. The carts are registered to specific addresses with a serial number & RFID tag. Once the cart is used, we can locate the cart and will come to retrieve it.

First time offense of using an mis-registered cart is a $250 fine. Second offense is $500.

In this instance below, a resident was paying for a Medium cart (the one on the right). However, our drivers are very aware of what people have and reported a Large on site also (which was reported taken from them that morning).

Please, if you need more service, call the office at 319-291-4455 and we can help you with some options:

Small - $10/month
Medium - $11.75/month
Large - $17.75/month

You are allowed to go with larger carts or have multiple carts. There are also $1.00 extra bag stickers, bulk item collection for bulky items, etc. Just call and inquire on how we can help you to avoid unnecessary fines that require wasted time to retrieve carts and return them to the rightful property.

🚛 SERVICE UPDATE – RAGBRAI 53

The Black Hawk County Landfill will be temporarily closed for Thursday, July 23rd, 2026, while RAGBRAI 53 travels along the landfill entrance road.

✅ Good news for City of Waterloo residents: There will be NO changes to your scheduled sanitation services.

✔️ Recycling Collection – Normal Schedule
✔️ Bulky Item Collection – Normal Schedule

Please have your carts at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on your regular collection day with the lids completely closed.

City of Waterloo Independence Day Holiday Schedule

The City of Waterloo will be closed on Friday, July 3, in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

Garbage Collection
Friday garbage routes will be collected on Thursday, July 2.

Recycling Collection
Friday recycling routes will run on their normal schedule.

Bulk Item Collection
No bulk item collection will occur on Thursday, July 2, or Friday, July 3.

Yard Waste / Compost Site
The Yard Waste/Compost Site will remain open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with no holiday closure.

CITY OF WATERLOO ANNOUNCES JUNETEENTH HOLIDAY COLLECTION SCHEDULE
WATERLOO, Iowa — The City of Waterloo Public Works Department announces service schedule adjustments in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.

Public Works offices will be closed on Friday, June 19. As a result, residents whose garbage is normally collected on Friday will have their garbage collected on Thursday, June 18.

Recycling collection schedules will remain unchanged and will operate as regularly scheduled.

Residents are also advised that there will be no curbside yard waste collection during the week of June 15. However, the City’s yard waste and compost site will remain open and unaffected by the holiday. The facility will continue normal operating hours from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily.

The City of Waterloo appreciates residents’ cooperation and encourages households to plan accordingly for the adjusted garbage collection schedule.

Waterloo Sanitation Department Instituting Existing Cart Exchange Policy Effective June 1st, 2026:

The City of Waterloo Sanitation Department will begin implementing a $20 Cart Adjustment Fee for residential cart exchanges, removals, and additional cart deliveries after the initial delivery has been completed.

This fee will apply when the request is made for reasons other than normal damage or loss not caused by the household.

In cases where a garbage or yard waste container is damaged due to actions caused by the household, residents will be responsible for:

The cost of the replacement cart, plus
A $20 Cart Adjustment Fee

Residents will not be charged for repairs or replacement of carts that are damaged through normal use, equipment malfunction, or causes not related to customer actions. These repairs or replacements will continue to be provided free of charge.

The Sanitation Department appreciates the cooperation of Waterloo residents as these policies help offset operational and equipment costs while maintaining efficient service for the community.
