As we gear up to celebrate Independence Day with family, friends, and outdoor fun, let's all do our part to keep the holiday safe. A few simple precautions can help prevent emergencies and ensure everyone has a great weekend. 🇺🇲

🎇 Fireworks Safety
• Leave fireworks to the professionals whenever possible.
• Never allow young children to handle fireworks.
• Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby.
• Never relight a firework that didn't ignite.
• Fully soak used fireworks before throwing them away.

🏕️ Campfire Safety
• Keep campfires small and always attended.
• Build fires only in designated fire rings or pits.
• Keep water and a shovel nearby.
• Make sure your fire is completely out—cool to the touch—before leaving or going to bed.

🌊 Water Safety
• Always wear a life jacket when boating or participating in water activities.
• Never swim alone.
• Keep a close eye on children at all times—designate a responsible "water watcher."
• Never operate a boat or swim under the influence of alcohol.

☀️ Heat & Hydration
• Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.
• Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
• Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and seek medical attention immediately if someone becomes confused, stops sweating, or loses consciousness.

🚗 Travel Safely
• Buckle up every trip, every time.
• Never drink and drive. Plan ahead and designate a sober driver.
• Watch for pedestrians, bicyclists, and increased holiday traffic.

🐾 Don't Forget Your Pets
Fireworks can be frightening for pets. Keep them indoors in a secure, comfortable place, and ensure they have identification in case they become frightened and escape.

As temperatures rise and the sun starts to stick around a little longer, so does the risk for spring wildfires. Even a small, controlled burn can quickly get out of hand this time of year due to dry grass, leaves, and changing winds. 🌬🍂

Before starting any outdoor burning or campfires, be sure to check the current permit status using the Michigan DNR Burn Permits Map. Burn restrictions can change daily, and it’s your responsibility to know before you light.

If you are going burn, be sure to do the following:

🔥 Keep a water source nearby (hose, buckets, etc.)
🔥 Keep tools handy (shovel, rake, etc.) to control spread
🔥 Clear any dry grass/leaves from around burn piles
🔥 Keep fires small and manageable
🔥 Supervise the fire at all times — NEVER leave any fire unattended
🔥 Fully extinguish the fire with water and stir ashes until cool to the touch before leaving

🚒‼️CLASS AVAILABLE ‼️🚒

The Watersmeet Township Volunteer Fire Department is currently accepting applications for individuals interested in serving as volunteer firefighters and Medical First Responders (MFR). We are seeking responsible, dedicated individuals who are willing to serve their community with professionalism and integrity.

There will be a MFR class beginning on April 30th, 2026. This course provides the necessary training to respond to medical emergencies and is open to anyone. No prior experience is required. Below are the details!

• 6 week course

• Monday and Thursday nights from 6 - 10 p.m. (virtual/computer)

• 3 in-person, 8-hour Saturday classes at Lac Vieux Desert Health Center for the practical portion

• Registration must be completed by April 15th
