Warm, dry, and windy conditions are expected to develop tomorrow, Friday May 15th. A Red Flag Warning is in effect for the counties highlighted in red in western Upper Michigan. Elevated fire weather conditions will be present in the central UP and Keweenaw.

As temperatures rise and the sun starts to stick around a little longer, so does the risk for spring wildfires. Even a small, controlled burn can quickly get out of hand this time of year due to dry grass, leaves, and changing winds. 🌬🍂

Before starting any outdoor burning or campfires, be sure to check the current permit status using the Michigan DNR Burn Permits Map. Burn restrictions can change daily, and it’s your responsibility to know before you light.

If you are going burn, be sure to do the following:

🔥 Keep a water source nearby (hose, buckets, etc.)
🔥 Keep tools handy (shovel, rake, etc.) to control spread
🔥 Clear any dry grass/leaves from around burn piles
🔥 Keep fires small and manageable
🔥 Supervise the fire at all times — NEVER leave any fire unattended
🔥 Fully extinguish the fire with water and stir ashes until cool to the touch before leaving

🚒‼️CLASS AVAILABLE ‼️🚒

The Watersmeet Township Volunteer Fire Department is currently accepting applications for individuals interested in serving as volunteer firefighters and Medical First Responders (MFR). We are seeking responsible, dedicated individuals who are willing to serve their community with professionalism and integrity.

There will be a MFR class beginning on April 30th, 2026. This course provides the necessary training to respond to medical emergencies and is open to anyone. No prior experience is required. Below are the details!

• 6 week course

• Monday and Thursday nights from 6 - 10 p.m. (virtual/computer)

• 3 in-person, 8-hour Saturday classes at Lac Vieux Desert Health Center for the practical portion

• Registration must be completed by April 15th

With many newer smoke alarms featuring 10-year batteries, the messaging around smoke alarms and batteries has evolved.

As Daylight Savings Time begins this Sunday, remember to adjust your clocks and check your smoke alarm batteries—only if needed. Don't forget to test your alarms monthly.

🚒👨‍🚒 Firefighters/MFRs Needed! 👨‍🚒🚒

Here in Watersmeet, we know life is busy for everyone. Work, family, school, long commutes, and everything in between — not everyone feels like they have extra time to give.

But when the pager goes off at 2 a.m... when a neighbor’s home is on fire… when someone’s loved one can’t breathe… someone has to be the one who shows up.

That someone could be you.

Our community depends on volunteers willing to step forward in emergency situations. The need is real, and it’s growing. We are in need of both Firefighters and Medical First Responders. You don’t need experience — just commitment and heart.

All training and education are provided at no cost to you. You don't need to be a firefighter to be a first responder. But you also don't have to be one or the other. We will give you the tools, knowledge, and support you need to serve safely and confidently.

And you don’t have to live right in town to join. Whether you live on the Cisco Chain, the county line, or next door to the fire hall, you can be a valuable member of the Watersmeet Township Fire Department.
