A glimpse at how we plant shelterbelts. Our
Equipment is old but it gets the job done. Did you know Codington Conservation District is not funded by the County, State or Federal government? We keep our doors open by planting trees and the other services we offer. We greatly appreciate your support!

We will be counting trees in preparation for our end of the year sale. We would like to get the cooler shut off by May 31st. So, if you still need to pick up your order please do so by this Friday. Any order remaining in the cooler May 26th will be put up for sale and no refunds given. Plus the trees really need to be planted before the ground gets too warm. Thank you for your understanding.

We have extra Chokecherry selling for $65 per bundle of 25 trees plus tax. Please message me how many bundles you need. I have posted information below along with a photo.

The chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) is a highly adaptable, cold-hardy deciduous shrub or small tree native across North America. Reaching up to 20 to 30 feet tall, it naturally forms dense thickets via underground rhizomes. It is an excellent choice for wildlife habitats and windbreaks.

AppearanceFlowers: Produces long, drooping clusters (racemes) of fragrant, small white flowers in mid-to-late spring.Fruit: Followed by pea-sized berries that ripen from bright red to dark purple/black in late summer.

Foliage: Shiny, oval dark green leaves that transition to golden yellow, orange, or reddish-purple in the fall, depending on the variety.

Care and CultivationLight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Full sun promotes the best foliage color and maximizes fruit yield.

Soil: Highly adaptable to various soil types (including wet or drought-prone areas), though it prefers well-drained soil.

Maintenance: Chokecherry spreads and produces suckers. If you want to prevent it from turning into a thicket, regular clipping of basal suckers is required.

Hardiness: Extremely resilient in cold climates, successfully growing in USDA Hardiness Zones 2 through 9.

Uses and ConsiderationsEdibility: While raw berries are famously astringent—combining sour and bitter flavors—they are highly prized for cooking. The fruit is processed into delicious jams, jellies, and wines after cooking to reduce their tartness.

Wildlife: The flowers support early pollinators, and the fruit is a primary food source for many bird species.
