As we head into the 2024 season, I would like to point out a great program hosted by the state of Minnesota named Lawn to Legumes. You will find it at the website, https://bwsr.state.mn.us/l2l. This is a wonderful program to assist
you in getting started. We will provide you with everything you need.

The Lawns to Legumes program offers a combination of workshops, coaching, planting guides and cost-share funding (individual support grants) for installing pollinator-friendly native plantings in residential lawns. The program also includes Pollinatory Pathways grants, which are pollinator programs....

This Woodland Phlox or Wild Blue Phlox (Phlox divaricata) decided to delight us with an early show in the greenhouse! Grown from seed collected on our property in West Central Minnesota. Over time, this shade perennial spreads via rhizomes and creates vibrant patches of blue/purple patches in spring.

We're loving all the yellows in the prairie on this bright, sunny day! This busy little bee is certainly enjoying the Grass-Leaved Goldenrod (Euthamia graminifolia).

As this plant has a strong rhizome root structure, and therefore can be aggressive, we experimented with planting it on the edge of the prairie next to other forbs and grasses with hearty root structures, such as Sawtooth Sunflower (Helianthus grossesrratus). We're happy to say that so far, the neighbors are getting along! Do you have aggressive natives that you've had success with? Let us know!

Happy birthday, Jill!

Founder and master gardener, Jill Danielson, is celebrating her birthday in her favorite place: outside in the prairie! I (her daughter) am so lucky and proud to call this talented woman my mother and friend.

While the compass plant (Silphium laciniatum) is known to get tall, this particular one is pushing 10 feet 😯😍 It's also loaded with happy busy bees this afternoon. 🐝🌻
