With October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Watertown Police Department wants to remind our community that support is available for anyone experiencing domestic violence.

Domestic violence can impact individuals and families in many ways, and no one should have to face it alone. Raising awareness, recognizing the signs, and connecting those affected with resources and support are important steps toward making a difference.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please know that help is available. Those seeking support related to domestic violence can always contact the Watertown Police Department at 617-972-6500. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

Below are some available resources:

SafeLink – SafeLink is the state 24/7 hotline for anyone affected by domestic or dating violence. SafeLink can be utilized for safety planning, referrals or for those who just want to talk about their relationship. SafeLink has translation services and can be reached at 877-785-2020. People who are deaf or hard of hearing can reach SafeLink by dialing 711 and asking to be connected to the hotline. https://casamyrna.org/get-support/safelink/

Chief Hanrahan is pleased to announce the promotions of Mark Leitner to Lieutenant and Joseph Kelland to Sergeant, effective Wednesday October 7, 2026.

Lieutenant Leitner joined the department on March 4, 2002, and was promoted to Sergeant on June 27, 2024. His career has centered on the Night Patrol Division, with a temporary assignment in the Detective Division. A former Field Training Officer, he now oversees the department’s FTO program. He is a longtime fi****ms instructor, a defensive tactics instructor, and a former member of the NEMLEC Regional Response Team. Lieutenant Leitner will serve as the Night Shift Lieutenant.

Sergeant Kelland joined the department on January 3, 2020, and served in Patrol before joining the Detective Division on November 3, 2024. He has distinguished himself as a skilled and dedicated detective, served as a Field Training Officer and a member of the NEMLEC Regional Response Team, and participated in numerous community policing events. Sergeant Kelland will now serve as the C Platoon Sergeant on the night shift.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

On Saturday, October 24, 2026, from 10am – 2pm come to the Watertown Police Department (552 Main St.) to safely and properly dispose your unneeded prescription medications.

Please note: We cannot accept needles, inhalers, battery-powered vapes, or medical equipment.

Today the Watertown Police Department recognized Mr. Victor Torosyan, owner of Belmont Auto Center (180 Belmont St. Watertown), for his continued generosity and support of Watertown residents in need.

Over the past year, Victor has assisted the department on at least four separate occasions involving individuals and families facing serious transportation challenges. His efforts have included donating a vehicle to a family transitioning out of shelter, repairing donated vehicles at no cost, continuing to service those vehicles for the families who received them, and most recently repairing a vehicle for a woman whose lack of transportation was preventing her from accessing needed services.

Victor has never asked for recognition or compensation. He has simply stepped up whenever we have called and has repeatedly demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to helping people in our community.

Thank you Victor for everything you have done for our department and the Watertown Community.

Community Information

Please be advised that Watertown High School (50 Columbia St.) will be testing emergency drills on Thursday, September 24, 2026, starting at approximately 9:00 a.m. until noon.

As part of the testing, announcements will be made over the loudspeaker outside the high school. If you hear these announcements, please be aware that they are only tests and there is no emergency.

During the testing period, the public is asked, if possible, to avoid the area surrounding Watertown High School, as streets may be closed while the emergency drills are being conducted.

We had a great time at Faire on the Square this past Saturday! We enjoyed being a part of the Apple Pie Bake-Off, interacting with the community at our tent and we even got to bring out our newest addition to the fleet, the Trikke!! The Trikke will be used for routine patrols in parks, along the Charles River path, and for community events, allowing officers to maintain a visible presence while engaging with residents. Keep an eye out for our officers on the Trikke and don’t hesitate to say hi!
