New in the Little Free Library: Kindred by Octavia E. Butler.

“The visionary author's masterpiece pulls us--along with her Black female hero--through time to face the horrors of slavery and explore the impacts of racism, sexism, and white supremacy then and now.”

Thanks to an anonymous library patron for this donation. You’ll have to come quick to get this one, as I’m very tempted to borrow it myself!

You may have heard of food deserts, but have you heard of book deserts? Check out this project to bring books to underserved areas of Baltimore, Maryland. Notably, this is exactly where the memoir White Out about he**in addiction is set (recently featured in our library).

Do you know of any other initiatives designed to support access to books in underserved communities?

A self-proclaimed "radical street librarian" is addressing book deserts by providing free books to areas in Baltimore with limited access.

UPDATE: Taken!

New in the library today: White Out by Michael W. Clune

My review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

In this dark and tangled memoir, the author delves deep into the tumultuous world of he**in addiction. The narrative’s brilliance lies in the complexity of the author’s thought process; it’s a labyrinthine journey through the psyche of an astoundingly smart individual who might just be too clever for their own good (and certainly too clever for me).

At times, the memoir felt like a puzzle, with pieces scattered across time and space, demanding a rigorous engagement to piece together the full picture. I honestly found it quite a struggle to get through, and a couple of unexpectedly racist episodes slowed me down further as I tried to grapple with what the author was trying to achieve by including them.

It’s interesting to note the author’s attitude towards harm reduction in the preface of this new edition, where he challenges the strategies meant to safeguard those in the grip of substance abuse. This sits in contrast who the optimistic epilogue in which he posits a future vaccine-like cure for addiction.

Come grab it from the library if it’s your cup of tea.
