The Department of Public Works (DPW) helped rescue some baby ducks the morning of April 29, 2026! Residents reported that the ducklings fell into a storm drain near Arsenal Street, and that the mother duck was pacing around and calling for help. DPW and Animal Control responded and, after some effort, were able to remove the drain cover and rescue all 13 baby ducks! They rejoined mom and waddled away.

See photos of the rescue on the Watertown-MA Health Department page.

We think the RATS and Lucky the Leprechaun are in cahoots... While we appreciate the spirit, please do NOT leave food items out for rats or other wildlife to eat. This only contributes to the rodent activity.

Residents are reminded that placing sticky traps, rat poison, or other pest control devices on public property is prohibited and can create serious public health and safety hazards.

Improper placement of these materials can result in:

❌ Injury or death to pets, wildlife, and protected species
❌ Accidental exposure to children and the public
❌ Secondary poisoning of hawks, owls, cats, dogs, and other animals
❌ Environmental contamination
❌ Liability for placing hazardous materials on public property

Sticky traps and rodenticides are regulated products and must only be used on private property, in accordance with the product label, and in a way that does not pose a risk to others.

❄️Cold weather can be tough, but staying safe doesn’t have to be! Keep warm and follow these tips to conquer the cold❄️

01/26/2026

We know it’s tempting to help when winter weather sets in—but please don’t share snacks with wildlife. 🦌🦝🦨🐿️🦆🦃❄️

Supplemental feeding may feel kind, but it often does more harm than good. Although it is usually done with good intentions, feeding wildlife can spread disease, attract predators, increase road crossings and vehicle collisions, cause aggression and injury, and teach animals to rely on people instead of their natural food sources.

The good news? Wildlife have adapted over thousands of years to handle deep snow, cold temperatures, and harsh winds by changing their behavior and using stored energy.
Keep our wildlife wild!
