TELL LARRY RHODEN: VETO THE SOUTH DAKOTA SAVE ACT.
🗽Isn't the SAVE Act a federal bill?
While yes, there is a SAVE Act in the U.S. Senate that Congressman Dusty Johnson has already helped pass through the House, South Dakota Senator John 'California' Carley brought forward his own version of the SAVE act in the South Dakota legislature (SB 175), which passed both chambers.
🤔What does SB 175 do?
In short: a lot of harm. This bill could disenfranchise thousands of South Dakota voters by requiring that South Dakotans provide documented proof of citizenship to register to vote, even though citizenship is already required to be a voter under the 14th Amendment of U.S. Constitution.
This bill doesn't actually fix anything that isn't already enforced by law; it just makes it harder for you to cast a ballot.
📝Is showing proof of citizenship really that hard to do?
Maybe not for most - but voting isn't just a right for most Americans. It's a right for every American citizen. This bill makes it harder in particular for married women and other South Dakotans who have changed their names and will need additional documents to prove their name change.
Additionally, the bill would also make it harder for lower-income voters, young people, seniors, and anybody else who doesn't have the ability or the time to obtain a passport or copies of their birth certificate.
🗺Have bills like this worked anywhere else?
No. Kansas enacted a similar law, and afterwards, 31,000 voters were prevented from voting. This is a violation of South Dakotans' right to vote, and does nothing to meaningfully increase election security.
