Today, members of Watertown Fire Rescue participated in specialized training on electric vehicle fires and lithium-ion battery hazards presented by Next Level Training Network.

As electric vehicles, e-bikes, scooters, and other battery-powered devices become more common, understanding their hazards is increasingly important. The training provided valuable insight into how lithium-ion batteries behave during failures and the challenges they can create during emergencies.

A few key takeaways we want our community to know:

• If you own an electric or hybrid vehicle, take time to familiarize yourself with emergency procedures, vehicle safety features, and the manual operation of doors and emergency exits.

• Avoid storing or charging lithium-ion powered devices such as e-bikes, scooters, or large battery packs in bedrooms, hallways, stairwells, or near exits. If a battery fails, it can produce intense heat, fire, and toxic smoke very quickly, potentially blocking escape routes.

We appreciate Next Level Training Network for providing an informative and eye-opening class that helps keep our firefighters prepared for the hazards of today and tomorrow.

This week is National EMS Week, a time to recognize the paramedics, EMTs, and emergency medical providers who answer the call every day to care for people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

EMS Week was established in 1974 to honor the lifesaving work being done by EMS professionals across the country and to highlight the important role emergency medical services play in our communities.

At Watertown Fire Rescue, our firefighter/paramedics and EMTs are proud to provide advanced life support care to the City of Watertown and surrounding area 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

We also want to recognize and thank the many ambulance services, volunteer EMTs, and EMS providers throughout the region that we work alongside every day. Your dedication, professionalism, and commitment to serving others does not go unnoticed.

Thank you to all EMS professionals during National EMS Week.

If you noticed smoke near Lake Kampeska last week, the Cattail Crossing Golf Course area was the site of a prescribed burn conducted by Watertown Fire Department.

This controlled burn was planned and monitored to help manage overgrown cattails and vegetation around the course. Prescribed burns are an important land management tool that can help reduce built-up dry vegetation, improve drainage and visibility, encourage healthy new plant growth, and lower the risk of uncontrolled wildfires in the future.

Burns like this are carefully coordinated around weather conditions including wind, humidity, and moisture levels to help keep the operation safe and controlled. Fire personnel remained on scene throughout the burn to monitor hot spots and ensure the fire stayed within the planned area.

You may see areas that look blackened now, but over time these controlled burns help promote healthier wetlands and vegetation growth around the course and lake area.
