FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BOIL WATER ORDER ISSUED FOR WATERVILLE VALLEY WATER SYSTEM DUE TO E. COLI DETECTION
Waterville Valley, NH – June 9th, 2026
The Town of Waterville Valley has issued a Boil Water Order for customers served by the Waterville Valley public water system following the detection of E. coli bacteria in the drinking water system.
E. coli bacteria are indicators of potential contamination and may indicate that disease-causing organisms could be present in the water. As a precautionary measure, all residents, businesses, visitors, and property owners served by the Town's water system are advised to boil water before using it for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, food preparation, or any other consumption-related purposes.
Customers should bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute and allow it to cool before use. Bottled water may also be used as an alternative.
The Boil Water Order is effective immediately and will remain in place until the Town completes additional testing, confirms that the water meets all state and federal drinking water standards, and receives approval from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services to lift the order.
Town staff and water system operators are actively investigating the source of the contamination and taking all necessary corrective actions to protect public health and restore water quality. Additional water samples are being collected and analyzed.
The Town will provide updates as information becomes available through the Town website, social media channels, local media outlets, and other public notification methods.
Residents are encouraged to inform neighbors, tenants, guests, and others who may not receive this notice directly.

Waterville Valley Hires Ed Mullen as the new Town Manager
The Selectboard voted unanimously to hire Ed Mullen as the new Town Manager on a three-year contract. Ed replaces Mark Decoteau, who served the Town for 24 years prior to his untimely passing on September 9th of 2025.

Although Ed has a long personal history in the area based out of Thornton, he comes to us most recently from Acton, MA where he was leading a team of inspectors as the Building Commissioner and Zoning Officer. Ed's municipal work has mostly been in land use in Massachusetts, working for Littleton, Amesbury and Concord before that. Before his time in municipal government, Ed owned Bluefin Building and design, where for over twenty years he led construction projects around the region and cut his teeth bringing in complex construction and development projects on time and on budget. Ed has several land use and building professional certifications and also has served as the Chair of Littleton's Planning Board as well as on the Board of Assessors.

The Select Board congratulates Ed on his selection and looks forward to working with him soon. The Board is confident that Ed possesses the talent, expertise, management style, and drive to tackle the many challenges ahead, some common to other small NH towns, some unique to Waterville Valley. The Board is primed to move forward with Ed to review Town structure, services, and procedures, and believes Ed will successfully lead Waterville Valley, the resort town "at the end of the road," into its third century.

Ed stated, "I'm honored by the Selectboard's confidence and grateful for the opportunity to serve the Waterville Valley community. Growing up in New Hampshire and spending much of my time outdoors, this region has always meant a great deal to me. I look forward to working with staff, residents, and the Selectboard to build on the Town's strong foundation and to support its future in a thoughtful and collaborative way."

Steve Royer, who has been working overtime to fill in as the Acting Town Manager, is excited to welcome Ed to the team, and believes Ed has the right personality and experience to meld nicely into the Town's culture and current needs. Steve has expressed that he is fully on board with this transition and is looking forward to supporting Ed's success as the new Town Manager.

Ed will be relocating his family to be based fulltime out of his Thorton home over the coming year, commuting in and staying in the area during the week while he gets settled.
Alex Torpey from Rethink Local, whose company facilitated the recruitment process, stated

"We're excited for both Ed and the Town of Waterville Valley. From nearly 20 applications, with three rounds of interviews, we had one of the most competitive final rounds of candidates I've seen recently, with a group of really excellent individuals. Ed's background, expertise, and personality stood out as a great match for Waterville Valley and I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone can accomplish together in the coming years!"

Ed's first day will be April 30th. The Selectboard on behalf of all staff and the community are excited to welcome him to the community and will be announcing plans for the community to get to know their new Town Manager.

The Town’s Municipal workers are truly saddened and heartbroken by the loss of our dear & fearless leader Mark Decoteau our Town Manager, for over 23 years. He was a most intelligent & excellent man, who led the way in hard work & fun, along with his strong moral & ethical values which guided his words of wisdom and actions daily. His kindness, patience & willingness to go above and beyond to help & train up the next generation did not go unnoticed by so many. We are truly blessed & honored to have known him, whether for a short or long time he has left an indelible impression on all our lives & hearts!

We would like to recognize the fact that Mark led the way in spearheading so many town projects that shaped and defined this little town of 200 he started with. The changes that he worked for surround us here in Waterville Valley, from the Town buildings to the Roads & Grants he went after, he set the bar high for improvements that shaped our Town’s foundational & operational abilities. Mark lit the torch on many unfinished projects that remain in our future. We will continue to solider on & press forward carrying on these projects in a manner that would make him proud!
We will miss you but never forget you!
