🚔 Career Exploration at BASC! 🏫

Yesterday, SRO Swanson had the opportunity to connect with students from across the region at the Bakken Area Skills Center's Annual Career Exploration Industry Day. We were proud to represent the field of law enforcement and engage with young minds considering their futures.

👮‍♂️ Law enforcement continues to be a strong and rewarding career path, especially for those who want to make a difference right here in our community. SRO Swanson shared insights into the many sides of modern policing—from patrol and investigations to school safety, crisis response, and community outreach.

💡 Students got hands-on exposure to what it means to serve, protect, and problem-solve—all while helping build safer, stronger neighborhoods.

A big thank you to BASC for hosting an incredible event and to the students for their interest and great questions. The future looks bright in McKenzie County!

Watford City, N.D. — November 4 2025

At approximately 12:55 p.m., officers from the Watford City Police Department responded to a reported structure fire at 701 2nd Ave SE. Upon arrival, the duplex was heavily involved in fire, and ammunition inside the residence began discharging due to the heat.

Firefighters from the Watford City Fire Department arrived and brought the fire under control in about one hour. During suppression efforts, firefighters successfully rescued two dogs trapped in the basement. No residents were home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

Detectives from the Watford City Police Department and the North Dakota Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire. The structure sustained significant structural damage. Displaced families have been assisted with temporary housing.

The Watford City Police Department would like to thank the McKenzie County Ambulance Service, McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office, North Dakota Highway Patrol, and McKenzie County Emergency Management for their coordinated response and assistance at the scene.

Chief Jesse Wellen praised the rapid response across agencies, stating, “The quick actions of our emergency services and first responders helped prevent further loss and ensured that everyone—including the pets—made it out safely. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Vehicle Crash at Watford City Post Office
Watford City, ND – October 24, 2025

This afternoon, at approximately 12:46 P.M., officers from the Watford City Police Department responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash at the United States Post Office, located at 1204 4th Avenue NE.

911 callers reported that a vehicle had driven into the front of the building. Upon arrival, officers located an elderly female driver of a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser, who was not injured in the incident. The driver reported that she accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake while pulling into a parking space directly in front of the building.

The Post Office building sustained significant structural damage to both the exterior and interior walls. As a result, the facility has been temporarily closed to the public.

The City of Watford City Building Inspector was contacted and is assisting in assessing the structural integrity of the building to ensure it is safe for employees and the public before operations resume.

At this time, the Watford City Police Department does not have information regarding when postal services will reopen. Updates will be shared as they become available.

The Watford City Police Department would like to thank the witnesses and bystanders who immediately assisted the driver following the crash.

“We’re grateful that no one was injured in this incident,” said Chief Jesse Wellen of the Watford City Police Department. “We appreciate the quick actions of nearby citizens and the cooperation of postal employees and city staff as we work to ensure the building is safe for everyone.”
