Let's talk books! We were out of town last weekend, but I want to say THANK YOU to some neighbors who dropped new books on our porch. We appreciate it! šŸ¤— I also picked up some new books at garage sales today, so I've rotated some of what's available now.

Here are just a few mentions:

FOR ADULTS -
šŸ“–All the Crooked Saints, by Maggie Stiefvater - a tall tale of sorts, described as "a gripping tale of darkness, miracles, and family."
šŸ“–The Rules of Magic, by Alice Hoffman - this is the prequel to Hoffman's wildly popular book (and movie!) Practical Magic. Described as a "fairy-tale promise with real-life struggle," I really enjoyed this one.
šŸ“–The Stolen Lady, by Laura Morelli - "a stunning historical novel about two women, separated by five hundred years, who each hide Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa—with unintended consequences." This one has more than 1,000 great reviews on Amazon!
šŸ“–The Eye of the World, by Robert Jordan - the first book in the massive epic fantasy Wheel of Time book series, which has been made into an Amazon series.

Does your child have summer reading for school? We have these books right now, with the publishers' recommended grade levels:

šŸ“ŒFrindle, by Andrew Clements (grades 3-7)
šŸ“ŒA Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L'Engle (grades 6 and up)
šŸ“ŒPrincess Academy, by Shannon Hale (grades 4-6)
šŸ“ŒThe Tale of Despereaux, by Kate DiCamillo (grades 2-5)
šŸ“ŒPay It Forward (Young Reader's Edition), by Catherine Ryan Hyde (grades 3-7)

Plus LOTS of picture books for little kids, and board books for our youngest readers!

Don't forget to check the black box on the side of the tall library box to see if we have any treats or trinkets out this week! 😁

We need more space for books, but we need to keep them protected from unpredictable summer storms! So now when you swing by, check inside the brown box next to the library - we’re going to see if this works as a solution for now.

Also - check the black box on the side of the library this week! I just put out some cute acrylic pins with a little treat. 🄰

Have you read Sara Novic’s amazing book True Biz? It’s one of my 5āļø reads for this year! Tender and eye-opening, True Biz pulls readers into the world of Deaf culture and communication through Charlie and her journey to find her place in both. Novic is holding this fabulous workshop with Random House for Deaf Awareness Month. Lots of buzz for this book, which comes out September 27th. For me, this was just a 3āļø read. Here’s why -

The first 1/2 of the book is _so_ slow. One synopsis mentions this story is about a past that just won't stay in the past, and I think that was part of the problem. Everyone in this book is stuck in a contemplative paralysis. All reflection, not much action. That’s difficult to invest in as a reader.

There is also a heavy, melodramatic fog over everything - the characters, the setting, the backstory that seems to consume everything. And for all the talk of magic, there’s a surprising lack of it until the very end.

Somewhere close to the middle, things do pick up. There is more dialogue, *slightly* more action, and pieces start to come together. Still, the heaviness of the book never quite lifts. I just wanted some air in this book! Something light, somewhere to breathe. I also wish the characters had been more defined or distinct. The book is written from several POVs, but they all end up sounding and feeling the same.

In terms of being an "atmospheric" book, it's definitely that. The island is a character of her own (even getting one chapter as POV!), so I count that as a success. And the ending is satisfactory (if not a bit hurried in its resolution). I'm not sorry I read this, but probably won't be shouting from the rooftops for others to read it, too.

Thank you NetGalley and Random House for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
