We are still in Stage 2 Water Alert. This calls for a voluntary 50% reduction of outdoor water usage. Lawn watering makes up 40% of the water demand so all homes and businesses cutting back on irrigation will make a difference.

As you start filling your summer calendar, here are a few dates to add.

1. Have a young entrepreneur at home? Sign them up for the Kids Markets by June 30. Kids can run their own booth, sell handmade items or baked goods, practice talking with customers and learn how to handle money. The market takes place on Friday, July 3 in Centennial Park. Register at https://kidsmarkets.com/markets/waukee.
2. We’re also getting ready for all the July 3 and 4 fun. From tournaments and the parade to volunteer opportunities, there’s a way to be involved. Find the full schedule at Waukee.org/IndependenceDay.
3. Planning a neighborhood block party for Independence Day? Submit your application by June 8 so council has time to review it and the associated street closures before your event. A deposit is required, but you will get it back if the barricades are returned in good condition. Apply at Waukee.org/PermitApplications.

How are you kind to your mind? Yesterday, City staff learned tips for taking care of our physical, mental and emotional well-being from Sheila Russell of Front Line Therapy LLC. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, staff showed their support by wearing a Be Kind to your Mind t-shirt from a fundraiser for a mental health organization.

Stage II: Water Alert was issued today, May 27 by Central Iowa Water Works (CIWW). Residents and businesses are asked to voluntarily reduce outdoor water use by 50 percent.

Why go to Stage 2? Nitrate levels are high in source waters. Treatment facilities are running, and all finished water continues to meet federal and state water standards. The forecast shows several days of hot, dry weather, which usually spikes demand from irrigation. To reduce stress on the water system, we're asking everyone to cut back on outdoor water use.

- If you water 2 days a week, cut to 1. If you water 20 minutes, reduce to 10 minutes. Make sure you only water in early morning hours so less water is lost to evaporation.

- Skip watering shaded areas and focus only on stressed patches.

- Sweep instead of hosing off driveways or pavement.

- Check for leaks inside and out: faucets, hoses, sprinkler systems, toilets. A small leak can waste a lot of water quickly.

Thanks for doing your part to help protect our water supply!

NOTE: Westown Meadows Park spray ground will go to reduced hours of 2-7 p.m. until conditions improve. Fox Creek Splash Pad remains open normal hours. It uses a recirculation system to treat and reuse water.
