When Rep. Aime Wichtendahl, Rep. Dave Jacoby, and I raised this exact concern during subcommittee and committee meetings, our Republican colleagues - namely, Rep. David Young - repeatedly dismissed our warnings as “fear mongering.”

We warned that taking a chainsaw to Iowa’s property tax code instead of using a scalpel would leave cities with impossible choices: cut police officers, firefighters, and other essential services, or find other ways to make up the lost revenue. A nearly impossible task given how little cities can actively recoup.

Now Des Moines is warning of budget shortfalls that could impact public safety.

These were never scare tactics. They were predictable consequences of bad policy.

This is just another domino falling in the chain.
