The Waukee Fire Department completed hands-on training with the Simulation in Motion-IA trailer, giving our crews a realistic environment to practice critical skills, decision making and teamwork in simulated emergency scenarios.

At the station, our fire trucks stay plugged in because we have important technology inside. One especially critical piece is our computer. When we’re responding to an emergency, it gives us real-time updates from dispatch, helps us navigate to the call and lets us pull up site plans for commercial buildings before we arrive. That means our crews have critical information they need before we ever step through the door.

If sirens or lights come up behind you in a roundabout, what do you do? Your first instinct might be to stop to let them go around, but stopping in a roundabout can block the emergency vehicle and slow them down. Instead, safely exit the roundabout, then pull over and give them room to pass. If you see an emergency vehicle approaching before you enter the roundabout, pull over and let them go through first.

Remember, wait until all fire and police vehicles have passed before getting back on the road.

We teamed up with the Waukee Police Department and Waukee Parks and Recreation for a fun Home Alone Awareness Camp. Campers learned about fire escape plans, how to call 911, stranger danger and cooking safety. They also got to climb inside a firetruck, ambulance and police car! One of our favorite parts was answering questions and hearing their thoughts along the way.

1. Go inside a fully enclosed building or vehicle.
2. Avoid open spaces.
3. Get to lower ground.
4. Stay off boats or bodies of water.
5. Stay away from trees, tents or pavilions.

Do you know what equipment we carry on the fire truck and ambulance? Get up close with some of our life-saving equipment and find out why each piece is so important during our City Explained session. If you ever wondered what goes into running a city, this is for you. It’s a free, 7-week program on Thursday nights from 6-8 p.m. from September 17 to October 29. Last week, the Waukee Fire Department joined fire departments, law enforcement agencies, and the Iowa National Guard for the 2026 Iowa Hero Academy. This weeklong camp gives high school girls the opportunity to explore careers in the fire service, law enforcement, and the military through hands-on experiences like spraying fire hoses, EMS scenarios, flying police drones, combat medic training, and more.

We were honored to help mentor the next generation of women in public safety and are already looking forward to next year's academy!
