What’s better than a perfectly grilled burger? Making sure your grill is set up safely so your cookout stays fire-free. Grills cause about 1,600 home fire every year, so before you light yours, make sure it’s a safe distance from your house, deck railing, overhanging branches and anything else that could catch on fire. After cooking, take a few minutes to clean any grease and food residue. It’ll help prevent flare-ups and the chance of a fire next time you grill.

Before your child rolls out on their scooter or bike, make sure their helmet is secure on their head. It should be tight enough that it does not shift more than 1 inch in each direction and the chin strap should be tight enough that the helmet pulls down when you open your mouth. As you prepare for the Fourth of July, here are a few reminders for firework safety.

1. Keep a fire extinguisher close in case of problems.
2. Soak fireworks and wire sparklers in a bucket of water before throwing them away.
3. Do not aim bottle rockets, roman candles or other fireworks toward people, buildings or vehicles.
4. Report any fires in buildings, vehicles or green spaces by calling 911 immediately.

In Waukee, the use of legal fireworks is allowed on July 3 and July 4 between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m. It is illegal to use fireworks on City property such as parks, parking lots, sidewalks, streets or the right of way. Review firework usage at Waukee.org/Fireworks.

This is an intense reminder of why it’s important to close your doors before going to sleep. In this case, the closed door helped keep the fire contained in the garage, reducing damage to the rest of the home.

It’s hot out there and we want everyone to stay safe. Slow down, take breaks, drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day. Being able to spot heat exhaustion or heat stroke early can make a big difference.

Heat exhaustion can look like:
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Weakness

Heat stroke symptoms include:
- A body temperature of 103 ° or higher
- Confusion
- A fast, strong pulse

If you see these symptoms or are experiencing them yourself, move to a cooler place and call 911.

Heat-related illnesses are preventable by staying hydrated & avoiding peak heat. Recognizing the signs of heat exhaustion & heat stroke—such as dizziness, nausea, or extreme body temperature—enables you to intervene quickly & provide potentially life-saving first aid.

During these warmer months, spending time in and around the water can be a lot of fun. Before you jump in, keep these safety tips in mind.

1. Wear a certified life jacket when you’re on or near the water.
2. Protect your skin with sunscreen and reapply as needed.
3. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
4. Always swim with a buddy.
5. Stick to approved swimming spots and stay out of ponds.
6. Walk on pool decks to prevent slips and falls.
7. Only dive in areas that are deep enough for diving.

Our Junior Firefighter Day Camp has changed dates. The camp is now on June 30, and we have a couple spots left. Kids 7-13 years old will spray a fire hose, learn about different firefighting tools and even try on the gear. Save your spot at Waukee.org/Registration.

There is a small gas leak near Park Road and S Warrior Lane. Residents in the surrounding neighborhoods may notice a gas odor in the area.
